[ While many would go out of their way to avoid picking up oddities while looking through the items people were trying to sell as they cleared out their clutter in what he could only describe as suspicious spring cleaning… A certain mage had always been rather drawn to picking up items of such a nature (often left behind by other mages who would not appreciate the ‘Scourge of Mage Society’s’ nosiness) and then analyzing and reverse engineering them himself… Maybe making some improvements.
Everyone needed a hobby, right? And at least this meant someone who knew what they were doing was picking stuff up before people who wouldn’t know did.
Of course, not everything always went to plan and sometimes the universe threw you little curveballs for its own amusement… And Waver was many things, amusing when ruffled being one of them. One of the townsfolk had slipped in a ‘bonus’ without his noticing, and while he absolutely could probably solve it… It wasn’t so simple when it presented a very distracting situation.
So… You know… Enjoy the sight of a man on his last nerve and the sound of multiple meows coming from the other end of the feed. Yes, that’s right, he’s got a cursed object that has attracted a bunch of stray cats to his workshop. ]
Afternoon, everyone. I seem to have picked up something a bit… complicated.
[ Gods, this is embarrassing… The man tries to keep a straight face, but there’s a stressed switch in his brows. ]
I’m sure there have been a few people who’ve already picked up oddities that the locals have been trying to get rid of, and while most of the ones I’ve come across have been fascinating finds…
[ No, seriously, his magic-solving brain has enjoyed the workout. ]
It seems something was slipped in that, while I can undo the enchantment, is proving to be more distracting than I can properly focus on.
[ Another meow, the sound of a beaker being pushed off the counter and breaking on the floor, is heard. Waver takes a deep breath. ]
If anyone is good with cats, I would gladly pay them to- stop scratching up my sofa! And you! Get down from there! [ He cleared his throat before trying again. ] I will pay someone to gather and remove these trouble makers before they destroy my workshop!

Torn between giving up on removing the cat and just letting it be since it wasn’t causing any trouble (beyond getting fur on his coat), he focused on that instead. ]
Somehow, I expect the way you mean that is different from what I’m imagining on that subject. Explains why you’re so used to cats, though.

[Because she thinks she has been rather straightforward with her words.]

The way you mean ‘Chewie’ assists you in fighting crime. It’s not a normal activity for cats, but in my world cats are sometimes used as familiars and they can definitely assist a mage in a few ways.
no subject
[So yes, Chewie is in no way a normal cat.]
no subject
No, uh… no, I don’t think I’ve ever come across one that can do that.
I won’t say it’s impossible. Sometimes cats used as familiars do change over time to become something more in line with a phantasmal beast and develop unique attributes… But I’ve never come across one like that in particular.

[ Speaking on which, he tries to pry the kitten from its perch again. But it’s purring, dammit. How can you disturb that? He sighed, letting it go with an expression somewhat less sour despite his usual attitude. ]

[She smiles at him then.} That one may end up staying.

Er…
[ He frowns, the wrinkle between his brow deepening because he really doesn’t know what to say about that. It might be, because what kind of irresponsible asshole puts the run to a defenseless looking creature like this? He still carries… a non-zero amount of regret concerning his last feline encounter. ]
It seems to have decided that, perhaps.

I’d appreciate that, it would save me some time and searching.
[ Yes, he supposed he’s resigned to keeping the kitten. He should put it out, or find it a home… But he makes the excuse that it would probably be better watched, and if Gray ever arrived… well, he knows she’d like it. ]

[She opens another container from her basket.]
Catnip.
