It's a Watts party! (Just don't tell him)
Who; Aerith + YOU
What; Potluck party
Where; Gray building's downstairs common room
When; Sunday June 26th; after 4pm
Warnings; None
Aerith co-opted the common room of the gray building starting on Saturday when she began the process of decoration. The most important part of any decoration (especially for Watts) was the flowers and Aerith had put together a few center pieces for tables. Each flower that she'd chosen had symbolized friendship in some way and they were set up in the center of small tables that had been brought inside. Of course she wasn't the one that moved those tables, she had a trust bodyguard for things like that, but she did the decorating!
And the cooking! The main attraction was a pretzel bar in the center of the room. Please, thank Cloud for bringing it in and Jacob for making the pretzel rack at Aerith's request. The soft pretzels were premade and there were plenty for everyone who may come through to have several (if not more). In addition to that there were also several dipping sauces to choose from including cheese, caramel, cinnamon sugar, honey mustard, and a spicy ginger sauce with chili flakes (eat at your own risk).
A table next to it had Materia Xiaolongbao. Yellow is crab flavor, black is soybean, blue is pork, green is cilantro, and red is spicy shrimp. Next to those are tiny moogle sweet bean buns. They fit in the palm of your hand but some of the moogles look...a lot better than others. She did her best!
There was another table with a few drinks set up for people to grab including a materia bomb cocktail with a bit of alcohol and different flavored materia ice (peach, strawberry, and blueberry) and bright green bubble tea with pop bubbles in the bottom. The green tea is flavored like something very different than one might expect it to be, it's a bit bit bitter and yet also a bit sharp, almost biting. It's meant to be the flavor of wind, whatever that's supposed to be. The pop bubbles are extremely sour and explode in the mouth with the sourness. The drink is also somehow fizzy, don't ask how.
A third table was empty save for the friendship bouquet at it's center. There was a little handwritten note on the table saying:
Leave your dishes here! Complete with a heart.
Aerith herself can be found wandering around and paying close attention to the drink table, making sure to run back to the kitchen quickly to grab more drinks if they run low.
OOC: Feel free to use this log as an open thing for anyone to mingle and get to know each other. Characters are welcome even if they didn't bring a dish themselves, but the more dishes the better! Anyone is welcome to come even if they didn't know she was throwing this party, it'd be pretty obvious that there was something going on in the Gray Building and she'll be leaving the door open with a small table that has a friendship flower bouquet on it. Please have some fun!

At least the best way to cope with that was by eating pretzels (and sharing a few pieces with his canine companion of the same name). Which is what he was doing when he happened to notice Ivy setting what looked like a pizza on the table, his eyes lighting up since he hadn’t found a good place for pizza here as yet. Investigating (like all good detectives do, as Ivy knew well) the table curiously. He raised a brow as he realized it was homemade and looked amazing. “I didn’t know you could cook.” Popped out first, before he ducked his head in greeting and tucked a pretzel in his pocket for later. “And afternoon- it’s good to see you, Ivy.”
It was good to see her out at an event. That was… progress on not being a vampire hermit or running into her at the tavern awkwardly, right?

"I grew up working in Pizza Piscary's. Lived there for a while too." She rolled her shoulders as if a vampire pizza place was the most normal thing one could talk about. "It's nice to see you here too." Better than running into him while he was drinking away his problems.

So it was an interesting detail about her life to learn about, something quite different compared to everything else. “I see, so you’re uh- actually something of an expert at pizza, then?” He added with a small smile, reaching for a plate. He could go back for pretzels anytime, but trying some of Ivy’s pizza would be absolutely necessary now that he knew.
And Llewellyn offered a wry smile to the comment, getting the feeling there was ‘and not at the tavern’ implied at the end of her greeting. “Yes, I am rather well acquainted with the host. I uh- work for Aerith at the flower shop, and she was quite excited about the idea.” And had clearly put a lot of work into it, so how could he not attend? And… Well, it was at least informal and not as large as a full party would have been. It was a nice way to ease in to socializing outside the tavern or work again, perhaps.
Plus, it really did seem to be doing wonders for bringing people together, what with the influx of new arrivals he’d noticed.

"Piscary's the expert," she replied wryly as she watched him take a slice. There was expectation in her eyes, betraying that she was pretty eager to hear what he thought. "I just picked up some knowledge here and there while Kist and I lived there. Sometimes he made us work during the summer." She shrugged. "Must be hard to imagine my ancient Egyptian undead Master working in a Pizzeria, huh? Killer cook though." In more ways than one. Not only was the place one of the highest rated food places around, it was also one of the most well known vampire dens in the city.
"I've spoken to her a few times. Nice shop. Cheery girl." Bit too cheery for Ivy's tastes, even if her own abilities meant she could recognize someone who might be hiding some of their emotions. "I can't really remember the last time I went to anything like this. Not really the type of party I went to back home."

“I confess, it is an odd mental image to try to put together…?” But the pizza had captured his interest, and it didn’t take him long to take a slice for his plate for sampling. Absentmindedly listening to her explanation as he eyed it thoughtfully. She seemed to be brushing the suggestion off… But he was pretty sure that, expert or not, it was going to be delicious. It was already leaps and bounds better than anything he or Rhy could make. As much as they were trying to get better at that. Llewellyn showing the least improvement on that front. So he took a bite, getting the distinct feeling she was waiting to find out if it was as good as he guessed.
And it was delicious! A pleased, enthusiastic hum escaping at the flavour. “I uh- hate to argue, but I believe you are at least an expert at making them, compared to many pizzas I’ve had in the past. Clearly, you absorbed more than you realized.” He responded with a small shake of his head, offering a small grin. How did people do this? How did they make something that tasted so good?
Llewellyn, if he were the sort to gossip about a friend, would have offered that Ivy was probably right. But he wasn’t, and though concerned, he respected Aerith’s privacy on that front… Unless it was directly tied to someone else. So he instead nodded in agreement with Ivy’s next comment. “Nor have I, at least not for quite some time…? It’s… Rather nice to see everyone gathered like this.” Jack hadn’t done parties after he got married to protect his ‘cover,’ and then Milo…? Milo had liked things a little more opulent and far from low-key. Then the rest had more or less… decided who the ‘in group’ was, and he hadn’t made the cut by the way things had fallen outside work.
So being included now, with his friends and in a setting a little less uncomfortable, was a nice way to ease back in.

"Why do I feel like that's not the compliment you think it is?" She couldn't really imagine him making an entire pizza. She could imagine him burning an entire pizza, but making one? She wasn't so sure there. She sighed though. "Maybe I'll accept pizza expert of this place as a new title. I'm currently without one." For the first time in years. It was actually weirder than she'd thought it'd be to not really have a profession or title here. Sometimes it led to her being more bored than she could ever recall being. "Glad you're enjoying it though." Another thing she strangely meant. It was kind of nice to have someone enjoy something she'd made this much. "I know how to make them with just about any topping, so if you ever want one..." She probably wouldn't mind making it.
"We don't really do things like this back home. Fancy Christmas parties and nightclubs are more what I'm used to." Thankfully she hadn't run into anyone trying to hold an upscale Christmas shindig here. Small favors. "Guess it is nice to see a sense of community or whatever you'd call it."

He offered a soft laugh. “I hope you would take it as a compliment. It’s uh- true that Toronto in my era doesn’t have the greatest selection for things like pizza as yet… But! I do have another entire world of experience to pull from other than my own, as well.” And he had gone out for pizza with people a few times there, trying all manner of odd toppings and styles. So! This was, indeed, a decent compliment. At least, he thought it was. “Considering I haven’t seen pizza here so far, I bet ‘Pizza Expert’ is a role that needs filling, too.” He added with a grin. Making pizzas and investigating cases, not a bad way to pass the time, he supposed.
The offer gets a curious expression. “I wouldn’t mind trying other toppings, if you mean that… Perhaps you could even give me some pointers one day.” He added, though she probably didn’t need that kind of disaster on her hands. He was, after all, quite hopeless in the kitchen. Glancing around at the party again, though, he nodded lightly. “I think I’d call it that… A rarity in most places as time passes, but it’s nice to see here.” It was easy to imagine Ivy attending fancier gatherings, of course. But those did seem to be a little rarer around here. Not that he was complaining, either.
no subject
The problem with Ivy just taking a compliment at face value came down to the fact that she still wasn't used to a compliment being just a compliment. Her world was one of double meanings and ulterior motives. "Thanks," she said with just a hint of stiff awkwardness.
"Not sure if a pizza expert is really what this place needs. Then again, haven't really found any places that sell it." Which had been kind of disappointing. She let out a laugh and raised an eyebrow. "Why wouldn't I mean it?" Though she kept laughing at his offer. "I have been wanting something more dangerous to sink my teeth into." And him in the kitchen? It definitely seemed on the side of danger.
"Wonder if people are honest about it or if it's forced."
no subject
Compliments could be hard to take, especially concerning things you didn’t feel like you were worth complimenting for… Llewellyn could get, especially considering compliments could be less than sincere or have ulterior motives in some way. He only hoped she knew he was genuine as he continued to eat some more of the pizza slice he’d taken. “Of course, and thank you for the delicious pizza.” He added with a pleased tone and grin.
“Considering how many things this place needs, I’m sure it’s on the list somewhere.” He responded with a wry shrug of his shoulders. “There used to be a stand at Sphere I would take people to, and one place that did pizza pretzels. No such places here, though, I’m afraid.” So pizza had been a missed dish, really. This was an exceptionally nice treat.
“Oh, sometimes people say things in my experience as more of a vague idea than something they intend.” He responded in all seriousness. But she did seem genuine in her offer by that comment, so he leaned against the table and chuckled a little at his own inability in the kitchen being described as ‘potentially dangerous.’ Which it was… “Well, if it’s danger you want, look no further. Set more than a few things on fire back at the Sphere. I think a few people were glad when I finally moved out of the dorms for a break from that.”
Tilting his head at the idea, he considered the people he’d met at the potluck so far. “I would say at least most of them are, and others are probably more forced by may have some… Either for the food or because they happen to live here. But they could underlying desires to be included.” It would be nice to think everyone was here because they genuinely wanted to be a part of the community, but people were different and it wasn’t hard to imagine them simply coming for practical reasons.
no subject
"You're welcome." There was a stiffness and hesitation in her tone that betrayed her unfamiliarity with just accepting a compliment she knew was genuine. "Pizza pretzels? Piscary's sold pizza bites." But she could actually see him trying to capitalize on the market. "I could see him enjoying a pretzel that you stuffed with pizza toppings." It'd probably amuse him to give it to a human and have them bite into marinara sauce without any warning. Not that she wouldn't find that entertaining in her own way...
"I don't." She was completely serious about that. Ivy rarely said things she didn't mean. Wasting her time wasn't something she was a fan of and most people that'd had the displeasure of working with her probably knew that. She leaned back and raised an eyebrow. "I feel like you're exaggerating." But she was both curious and worried that he wasn't. She let out a quick chuckle at his explanation. "Underlying desires to be included? Oddly specific."
no subject
Her stiffness gets a curious glance, as Llewellyn mused over the possibility that his friend just wasn’t comfortable with the compliment… Or doubted it somehow… But it was the truth, and it wasn’t as though Llewellyn was always the best with some kinds of compliments himself. Her question gets a brighter smile, though. “Yes! They were more or less like that exactly, stuffed with cheese and sauce with some other things. They were quite good, and different from most pretzels I’ve tried.” And now that he was speaking on the matter… He kind of wanted one again. So, instead, he focused on the slice of pizza he was savoring. Because that was just as good, really. “Though I can see why some in your world might find the concept amusing, given what you’ve said about humans and tomatoes. It would rather give them a fright, hm?”
The raised brow gets a sheepish grin. He really wished he was exaggerating. Especially since he was a homeowner now, with a kitchen… The poor kitchen. “I am afraid that I am being entirely honest here, not that I’m prone to lies in the first place. You should see some of the pots and pans I’ve had to throw out.” He chuckled wryly. If Ivy wanted a slightly dangerous afternoon someday, watching him in the kitchen was a good way to do that without facing any monsters or anything!
Rubbing the side of his face slightly, he supposed it was, but… “It seems like a lot of people don’t necessarily wish to be alone, it’s only a little hard sometimes to figure out how to fit, isn’t it?” Goodness knew how awkward he had been sometimes… Even now, he could be once in a while. The potluck was a good way to ease back in to a slightly more social situation, and if the turnout was anything to go by… more than a few people were enjoying the atmosphere too.
no subject
"You've had to throw out pots and pans?" How did someone damage something that much? Did she even want to know about that? "I'm surprised you haven't hurt yourself." Actually, he hadn't said he hadn't. Maybe he actually had. That was a terrifying idea.
"I'm fine with being alone," she said with a shrug. Was that actually true? No, but she'd pretend with everything she had. At least she's pretty good at keeping a hard to read face. "Do you struggle with fitting in here?"
no subject
Llewellyn offered a wry smile, “Yes… But I always made sure to find replacements to make up for it.” He responded with a serious nod, as though that was the bigger problem. Which it wasn’t… But he was still counting it as such, anyway. Rubbing the back of his neck as she suggested it was surprising he hadn’t hurt himself. A few small burns here and there didn’t count, surely? “Mm… Nothing first aid kit couldn’t handle, the odd time it came up. You, uh- know what it’s like when you worried about things burning and all.” Ivy he was truly a disaster in the kitchen! A chaotic, well-intentioned disaster.
The detective raised a brow at her suggestion that she was fine with being alone, considering he was… pretty sure that one could still desire company even if they were okay with solitude. “Mm… If you say so, but I should point out that just because one is fine with it, doesn’t mean one has to be.” Yes, the detective said it. “Me?” He asked when the table turned slightly. “No… Not exactly- well, I have felt a bit awkward since I returned. But it’s more that I got used to life being a certain way, but I’ve been getting used to it again. Thanks to a few good friends reminding me.” And yes, Ivy was counted after their last conversation. And it was, of course, part of why he was here today. “But awkwardness or not? I find I fit here better than I fit there.”
no subject
"Generous of you to replace the things you destroyed." Though she honestly just really didn't want to see him cooking. Having lived above an actual kitchen she knew that it took something special to be able to actually destroy pots and pans. She arched an eyebrow at the word first aid and then shook her head. "You'd be fired pretty fast at Piscary's. Not that you'd be hired in the first place." Human and all. There were few things Piscary disliked more than humans. A human that might ruin his kitchen? Oh, there'd be hell to pay for that.
"I know that." Did she sound a bit childish in her response to that? Maybe just a bit (more than a bit). At least she looked a bit proud at having turned the tables on him. "I'm glad you've been getting used to it again."
no subject
“Well… It seemed wrong not to, plus it’s easier to mm… bi-pass the discussion if destroyed cookware if there’s something new already waiting to be used instead.” He responded with an awkward, wry smile. It really was a point of embarrassment. Sometimes he wondered if he’d ever improve… But people kept telling him he could and should, so the detective would continue to work on it (and endanger the kitchen). “Oh- I don’t doubt that in the least, Ivy. If I were foolish enough to apply, I expect someone would turn me down without a second thought. So… I have definitely crossed that possibility off the list should I ever need to seek other means of employment.” He finished with another small laugh. It was an absurd thought to see him in a kitchen to begin with. Unless someone wanted him to ruin the restaurant, it was not a setting he belonged in aside from as a customer.
“Of course… Not everyone does, is all.” He responded with a slightly raised a brow at her tone. He knew that it was more than a little complicated… But he hoped she’d still keep trying to venture out to events like this a little more often. At least nothing particularly dramatic had happened so far! But she had turned the tables a little, and rubbing the back of his neck, he ducked his head in a nod. “I have been. It’s… been nice to get back to something closer to this all feeling normal, again.”
no subject
"So, you prepare replacements so people can't be too mad that you ruined something?" She wasn't entirely sure if that was clever or just a bit sad that he was so prepared for the idea that he'd completely ruin something. "Maybe you'd be a good sabotage pawn." The sad thing about that statement was she could actually see someone in her world using someone like that. "At least you recognize your weaknesses." That sly smirk hadn't left her face the entire discussion.
"Obviously," she still sounded just a tiny bit defensive, but she'd lightened up some when he conceded. She leaned back against the table behind her and smiled. She was glad to know he at least seemed to have confirmed to himself that the him here was the real him. "Strange to think this place can be normal."
no subject
Which was so very disappointing!
“It is a rather strange place to think of as normal, but mm… Compared to the Sphere or my world, it’s a more pleasant normal to get settled into, I think.” He paused with a scrunch of his brow. “The less pleasant surprises, like creatures or plants wanting to kill people aside, of course.” That still sounded pretty weird to consider normal, but this was their life now.
no subject
"Normal relatively speaking then," she replied with chuckle. Now that he'd mentioned the plants she scrunched her eyebrows and frowned. "Seems like it's been a while since anything too bad has happened." Odd to think about that. Though now she'd end up worrying if she was just inviting something bad to happen.
no subject
It was an absurd mental image, to think he could be a secret weapon in a war between pizza restaurants. “That is quite the mental image, though I might not make the best secret weapon for long if I happen to accidentally bring the truth to light somehow.” The truth always got out eventually, especially for him. It was almost like a ticking time-bomb, and the clock always reached zero at the most inconvenient time. “So if you ever take your pizza-making to another level, I shall be sticking to taste-testing duties over sabotage.” He admitted with a small laugh. He couldn’t really imagine it coming to pass anyway, but it was still quite the potentially funny scenario.
He nodded though, “It has been… Which I try not to think about, really. With our luck, the timing would be comically on-point, I’d expect.” Because who knew what would be next… It almost seemed to happen in cycles. Good additions, strange additions, dangerous additions… Hopefully the good kind were in their future, but it would be unrealistic to not at least consider that some less than desirable ones might occur sooner rather than later given his track record when it came to the ratio of good and bad things in the last few years.
no subject
"You know, I could see that. You just telling someone the truth on accident or because you felt bad." She definitely could see him admitting to it because he felt guilty or something like that. It'd probably all depend on how ad of a person the competitor was. "I'll keep you in mind as an official taste tester. You'd probably be pretty good at it. Maybe even a second career possibility." The quirk of her lips implied that it was definitely meant as a little joke.
"I refuse to accept blame if something happens." She just wanted to put that out there just in case something came up.
no subject
Llewellyn hummed lightly at the comment, “I almost feel as though we should put that down on paper as proof that it’s not our doing. Though, I expect the blame would easily fall on something that got broken again or a lack of communication considering the last few, mm… less than pleasant things we’ve seen.” He added thoughtfully. Most of the time, he felt rather bad for the Aspects. They clearly had no idea what they were doing at times and had no real frame of reference… But, sadly, most of the time, it seemed to be their accidental doing. Aside from the plants, of course.
no subject
"We're the only two that heard it, so there'd be no proof. As long as we agree to not blame each other when it happens." It was probably a when, not an if. They were due for something bad, at least that was how her life generally went back home. Things had been nice and rather quiet for a few months now. Way too long.
no subject
“Mm… That’s true.” And no one needed to know they’d even considered it, right? Simply not speaking of something was far easier than lying about it, anyway. He just had to keep his mouth shut. Easy! Probably… Maybe… “I won’t say anything if you don’t, then. It’ll be uh- our secret if something does happen.” he added with a grin, hardly about to blame Ivy when something happened. He was more likely to blame himself, after all.
