Lost in the marketplace

[The feed turns on and Joshua has mounted it atop a wagon, unaware it's turned on. He's heard about little people visiting that haven't been seen before from the sellers, but here he is holding a piece of fruit that he's never seen before. For a few moments, he simply watches the people and shakes his head after purchasing the fruit, looking down at it.]

This is a market place unlike any that I have ever seen back home.

[ Yusuke is glad to see Joshua is still around after the winter. He had really appreciated his assistance. ]

Hm, I admit it’s quite different from what I’ve been accustomed to before, but it has a rather old-fashioned charm. What are markets like where you’re from?

[ He figures it’s good to ask, given people seem to arrive from such different places or time periods from one another. ]

[He nods to the familar face even if the device isn't as familiar.]

They're open..something like this, yet it's very different. It's a different feeling even. It's more organized here.

So similar, but not as organized as the ones here, I see.

[ So he was from a world or time similar enough to this one. It was more the setting itself and its layout that was unfamiliar. ]

They do keep tidy market stalls and shops, rather admirably so. Were you at the market to familiarize yourself with it, or are you looking for something in particular?

[Joshua nodded]

I dedicated myself to learning back home. My journeys took me all over and so I am here, curious and wanting to familiarize myself with the customs here.

[Here he didn't have Clive or Jote here with him to keep him company.]

I certainly see the value of learning the layout and traditions of where you go. Though I admit my own travelling has never taken me quite so far as this before.

[ Tokyo was his home, and he knew it well, though he had a class trip coming up that would take him quite far from there. That seems a bit far off now, all things considered. ]

I have been here quite a long while now; I admit. Would you like any assistance with learning about this place?

[Joshua smiled. He and Jote had travelled quite extensively and that knowledge was given over to his brother, Jill and Vivian Ninetales.]

I would learn anything and everything you have to tell me of this strange new world that I am in. But I do intend to seek out its mysteries on my own as well.

Then I am glad to offer my assistance and what knowledge I have gained in the time that I’ve been here.

[ Yusuke agreed with a light smile. ]

Is there any particular interest you hold that I should consider starting with, or shall I offer interesting things as I think of them?

[He nodded and thought. There were a few things he could use more knowledge of. But he looked at the device in his hand.]

This tell phone would be a good start. We're not quite as advanced to know what something like this is capable of.

I see! Phones like these are quite common where I’m from, so I would be happy to assist in showing you more about how to use them. Is there a particular aspect of them that you’re having difficulties with to start?

[He thought a moment before nodding as Joshua looked at his device.]

I've seen many around town doing what they call taking pictures. So I suppose there would be a good place to start.

Ah, photography! A true delight and a wonderful art form. Camera phones do make it rather accessible as well.

[ Smiling lightly, he nodded. ]

It would probably be more productive to show you in person, though.

An art form? Back home we have paintings and tapestries and banners that would be art.

[He mentally banished the one of Ultima's plans from his mind. But at the other's offer, Joshua nodded.]

Whenever you have time that would be most helpful.

[And then he recalled a conversation he'd overheard.]

I could purchase lunch or dinner in exchange for your time.

Ah, yes. You’re more familiar with my preferred medium to work with, then. That is to say, I paint, though I do dabble in other forms at times. But photography is also considered an art that many do enjoy where I come from.

[ He responded with a light smile. ]

I do have quite a lot of free time, so you need only ask. Payment isn’t necessary, though I suppose I would not say no to a small meal in exchange.

[ Ah, Joshua, you are a kind soul. Yusuke could always use a meal. ]

So you create art then. Do you have any on display here?

[Because he would definitely look at them. But then he smiled at hearing Yusuke's acceptance.]

It's only fair since I will be taking up your time while you show me how to work this device.

[Joshua couldn't admit that while he didn't have his brother's temperament, he might still break something inadvertently.]

I do have a few pieces on display at a local flower shop. It’s run by a woman named Aerith who was kind enough to allow me to do so.

[ He had been running out of room to store the pieces, and it was nice that some seemed to appreciate the sight of them, even if he was still working on his technique. ]

I would be glad to show you how to use your phone regardless, but I will agree to the terms as the meal would be appreciated.

A flower shop.

[Joshua paused a moment and then nodded. He had seen it and now he'd have to go back to it.]

I would appreciate your help, so I thank you in advance for your time and trouble.

Indeed, it’s quite a lovely shop as well.

[ The response gets a polite dip of his head. ]

Think nothing of it. I am always happy to be of assistance. This place can be rather confusing as it is to arrive without needing to learn how to use unfamiliar technology as well.

[Joshua was quiet since he used to wander the lands back in Valisthea with Jote. Then there was all of the travelling with Clive and Jill. And here he was, confounded by a simple handheld machine.]

I will be sure to visit it then.

[He smiled at the head dip of the other.]

Then I shall await you here. And if you're hungry when you first get here we can eat before lessons.

[ after taking another quiet look at the scenery behind Joshua in the feed, he smiled lightly. ]

I shall be there soon, I don’t believe I’m too far off from where you’ve found yourself.

[ and true to his word, Yusuke is seen approaching about 15 minutes later. ]

I will be here.

[He quietly sat on a log that had been made into a bench. People watching wasn't new to him and so he sat patiently and learned of places to eat which would prove fruitful. When he saw the man he'd been speaking to appear in person, Joshua stood with a nod.]

I appreciate you taking the time out of your day to assist me.

Think nothing of it, my friend. It’s important to help one another out, especially when this place can be a touch confusing without needing to worry about unfamiliar technology.

[ Yusuke responded with a light smile. He remembered how confusing it was when he arrived… And he was lucky enough to be familiar with cell phones beforehand. ]

Now, let us find a place to sit without being in the way of those going about their day. Then I can assist with how the phone works and answer any questions you might have about it.

[There was a smile at hearing the word friend. For some reason, that word was something he never thought he'd hear in this very unfamiliar place.]

I am usually quite good at figuring things out. However, this device is beyond my ken. Especially when I am unsure as to where to go to find out all of its nuances and quirks.

[Joshua could sit with old tomes, or the hideaway Loresman or research lore himself anywhere. These new mechanisms however had him confused. But at Yusuke's suggestions, he smiled and inclined his head towards two wooden benches.]

We could sit over there if you would like, or we can start with food.

I believe that would be natural, if they’re not something common where you come from. There are even many in my own world that are not particularly good at using them either.

[ And others, like Futaba, who were amazingly adept with technology. He believed he sat on a comfortable middle ground. They were useful tools for communication and the cameras on them were pleasant to make use of.

The idea of eating before they began was a nice idea, but Yusuke thought it best to prioritize showing Joshua how the phone worked rather than allow himself to be distracted. ]

Let us sit over here then, and I can begin showing you the basics.

[ He agreed, moving towards the wooden benches to have a seat. Setting down his satchel, he smiled. ]

Now I believe the first step should be showing you which setting triggered the video, as it can be rather easy to do without realizing it.

[Well that was almost a relief to hear that other people weren't good at wielding these devices. However, Joshua was determined to have this be a one time deal to get help. He was an excellent scholar and so this bit of research would be his last. He would even take notes if it came to it.

Nodding to the offer to sit, Joshua walked over and sat a small polite distance away, eager to get to the lessons provided. Nodding at the offer of the starting point, Joshua smiled in return.]

Yes, that will work.

Wonderful, then let us begin.

[ He draws out his own tell-phone to demonstrate. He holds it at an angle for Joshua to view it. ]

Now you likely pressed this button here, which is fairly easy to do depending on how you hold the phone. This button here would be for audio, which works similarly.

[Joshua knelt so that he could be somewhat eye level with the other device. And like a good student, he pressed the buttons as Yusuke went over them, determined to get this right and not have to ask for help again.]

I will have to be more careful as to how I hold the phone then.

[ A good observation, Yusuke expected that this was the cause for many of the accidental broadcasts he’d witnessed since arriving. ]

Indeed, it would be easy to select the video or audio channels in error if you happen to be holding the phone with pressure placed on the buttons instead of the case itself.

[He nodded.]

Then I shall do so right away. If the functions of the device are simple, and with your expert tutelage, it won't take me long to learn them.

[ Expert tutelage? Oh my, who would have thought someone would describe his ability with phones as expert? Futaba would probably find that very amusing, really. ]

I am happy to help, and I expect you’ll be a fast learner given you have grasped what I’ve shown you already rather quickly. I admit, a friend of mine would be more the expert though. She’s incredibly talented with technology.

[That had Joshua smile to hear that there was someone who knew more or was more of an expert.]

I take it that friend is not here? Or are they?
