A Kitty and a Demon walk into a Forest
Who; Thomas (
prodigalvampire) and Shalimar (
abreedapart)
What; Trying to get to the bottom of the earthquake and power surge
Where; Starting at the commons, heading to the forest
When; After Thomas contacts Shalimar after The Captain’s post
Warnings; Nothing I can think of now, will update as necessary
Thomas had been laying low, reserving what energy he could because of a lack of sources to feed on, but the tables were turning. Something was going on in this place in which he’d found himself trapped, but he also didn’t think it was a good idea for him to go check it out alone. Shalimar was one of the few people here he’d spoken with casually, and one of the few people he’d decided would be capable enough for a field trip. He didn’t know much for sure about this place, but he did know that the earthquake had originated outside the city. It only served to reason it was south, through the forest, or at least all the weird bear sightings and imagery suggested something of the sort.
He found himself wishing his brother was around, even as he made his way downstairs where Shalimar and he had decided to meet to prepare before heading out of town. He’d shown up here with weapons, at least to get him through some of the nastier parts of town, but who knew how long they’d have to travel outside of town? Days? They needed provisions before they left either way.

If Thomas hadn't contacted when he did, she probably would have given in and gone as far as she could on her own. Strange timing. She didn't know him that way but there was something about him that gave her confidence that he could take care of himself. Instinctually predators always knew other predators. Besides, there was something she kind of liked about him. Maybe it was his dangerous aura, or maybe it was just the sarcastic tone he always seemed to have. Either way, he seemed like as good of a companion for an adventure like that as anyone.
"Hey," she said as she walked up to him with her hands in the pockets of her jeans. "Ready to get dirty?"
no subject
"Promises, promises." He was hungry, but he'd been more hungry in the past and he could handle it, even if her closeness brought the beast in his mind surging to the forefront and his eyes flickered two shades lighter before returning to their usual, storm cloud gray, with a blink. There was something dangerous about Shalimar, something that called to the Hunger directly rather than piquing its appetite. He almost questioned going out there alone with her, but they needed answers and the others were preoccupied with the events in the city.
They were the best alternative. "No idea how long we'll be out there, though, so I figured we'd stop by the market, pick up some provisions unless you want to Swiss Family Robinson it. I have no idea what, if anything, we can eat out there."
no subject
The brief change in his eyes also caught her attention for a second. Well, that was interesting. It wasn't obvious enough to be the sign of a feral but it was something noteworthy to say the least. What exactly was he?
"I could probably figure it out for us, but I doubt you'd be up for eating what we'd find out there," she chuckled and started towards the market, expecting him to follow. "Might as well grab some supplies to make it run as smoothly as possible."
no subject
"Maybe I like getting dirty." He shrugged but pushed away from the wall he'd been leaning against and started off toward the market. "But who can say no to beef jerky?" After a moment's pause, his smirk turned mischievous. "Do you think they sell Lembas bread around here?"
no subject
"Guess we'll find out once we're out there." Somehow she doubted he'd really enjoy getting dirty. This was definitely going to be an interesting adventure even if they didn't find anything. "I feel like I'm going to disappoint you again but," she paused and arched an eyebrow as they walked. "Lembas bread?"
no subject
He laughed at her question, though, looking down almost sheepishly. She'd caught his nerd and now he didn't know what to do with it.
"It's, uh, elvish bread. They...pack it for travel. It's from a book, no big deal."
no subject
"Elvish bread from a book?" She turned with a smirk on her face. "I think that pretty face of yours hides a lot about who you really are." A nerd. A huge nerd to rival even Jesse. "If you find it let me know. I've always wanted to see elvish bread." Not really. But she did find this amusing.
no subject
"And if I do find any, I'm getting it. The whole thing is it lasts a while."
no subject
She pursed her lips in a mock pout. "What will I do without the chance to try nerd bread?" She shook her head. "Got everything you'll need yet?"
no subject
Even as he was chatting, he did one last inventory of his back before nodding. "Yeah, I think. I guess it's quest start time."
no subject
"What reward do we get for completion of this quest?" There was always a reward right? She paid for the last few items she wanted to bring with her and then swung the small pack over her shoulder. "Hope you can keep up once we're there." She said with a quick smirk as she started off with a brisk pace towards the forest.
no subject
He grinned when she started off, keeping pace just fine. "I think I can handle it." But the question still remained of exactly how she could.
no subject
She started moving a bit faster just to see if he'd continue to keep up. "We'll see."
no subject
"You're the one who's a camper. What do you think?"
no subject
"You really gonna put it on me?" She laughed and shook her head as they got closer to the edge of the forest. "Fine," she folded her hands across her chest as she looked out and then over at him hesitantly. "The power surge came from here right? We need to find a trail. A scent. Maybe something connected to those two Aspects."
no subject
"You're the one talking about scents. What do you think you'll smell? Magic?"
no subject
"Magic?" She shook her head and then looked around. They were definitely alone here. There were sounds in the distance, the faintest traces of something she couldn't quite make out yet. Well, if they were going to do this and actually try to find something she might as well see what happened if she was honest. Or at least offered a bit more honesty than she had been. She looked over at him and her eyes shifted to look like a cat. "I think I should be able to smell them. Or anything else unusual. If anyone's come through here recently, I should be able to find a trail of some kind. People leave traces and nobody can hide their unique scent." And with that she was off to wander in a few steps, stopping here and there to look around until she came to a remarkably unremarkable tree. She stopped there and tilted her head.
"Both of them came out here. Not too long ago either, it's still pretty strong." She scrunched her nose up and then looked over at him, her eyes returning to their normal state. "Why were they even out here? They seemed pretty set on telling us it was dangerous out here."
no subject
His eyebrows rose in surprise at the shift in her eyes but he didn't question it. So, she was some kind of werecat or animal spirit or...something. Harry would probably come up with some creative and terrible name for it if he were around, but he shoved that particular flicker of homesickness to the back of his mind and moved to her side, gray eyes moving over the tree as though the mystery of the ages were to be found there before shaking his head and rolling his shoulder in a shrug. He wasn't an arboreal expert or anything, but it just looked like a normal tree to him.
It was enough that Shamilar recognized the scents of their captors. "Dangerous for us normies, maybe, but for gods?"
no subject
"Still have a hard time believing they're actually gods," she said with a shrug as she started to follow the trail they'd left behind. "Known a lot of people with power that claimed to be gods. They all just had huge egos." And a lot of power. Couldn't deny that they had a disturbing amount of power. She took a glance over at him and quirked an eyebrow. "You believe they're gods?"
no subject
Thomas had met a few of those himself, and he knew of a few others that people didn't need to know. "Did...they ever claim to be gods?"
no subject
She shrugged at his question. "I think they say they're aspects of some Creator. Close enough isn't it?" She stopped in her tracks suddenly and her eyes flashed again. "There's another scent. A lot of it, but it's not like anything in the city." Which meant she really had no idea what it was exactly. Or who.
no subject
"Maybe I should say safe." Heaven knew Thomas was the opposite, and in more ways than one. He also came with a small mountain of baggage no one else deserved to be saddled with, and that didn't even include the demon of Hunger wrapped around his soul. "Then again, I get the impression 'safe' is a turn-off for you."
He listened and then shrugged. "More like demigods. Bad ones at-" He stopped talking when he saw her eyes, raising an eyebrow. "What do your spider senses say?"
no subject
"Whatever it is, it isn't human. The scent gets stronger the further we go." She picked up her pace some and looked over at him. "Feline feral by the way, not spider."
no subject
"That's for clearing that up." He said, with literally no idea what a 'feline feral' might be. "So, what is it you're smelling, exactly? Animal, plant, or mineral?"
no subject
"Doesn't smell like an animal. Might be... humanoid."
no subject
Thankfully, there was something much more pressing to pay attention to and he made a point of focusing on it. "Humanoid? There are people out here?"
As if to illustrate the point, the bushes behind them rustled slightly, and on either side. There were several humanoids around, and they were trying to prevent escape.
"Oh. Cool." Thomas could feel the eyes on him, but he wasn't accustomed to such terrain, and he could decide whether the feeling was paranoia or foreshadowing. "They're surrounding us, aren't they?"
From the trees several yards ahead of them on the path, a lizard-like creature drops to the ground. It wields a crude spear from which dangle beads and feathers on leather thongs. It wears a headdress of polished stones and feathers as well and an equally crude breastplate of interlocking pieces that look something like wood. It watches them with slitted eyes before settling its gaze on Shalimar. When it speaks, its voice is dry and hissed, and the syntax is broken, making it clear this language is not one it's accustomed to.
"Outlanders stray." It pauses, blinking thoughtfully for a moment. "Why?"
Thomas, for his part, has gone still, far more still than any human could manage. It's as though he's a statue made flesh, the only movement perceivable the slight rise and all of his chest as he watches this creature that's stepped out of a fantasy game as it speaks to Shalimar.
no subject
"Well, well, about time you showed yourselves," Shalimar responded with a tone dripping in sarcasm. "Or at least one of you. You the elected spokesperson?" Despite how weird the thing looked, Shalimar's tone and body language seemed completely unphased by it's presence. "I'm Shalimar, this statute is Thomas. We're not looking for trouble, just answers."
no subject
The lizard tilted its head to the side as it listened to Shalimar's words and didn't respond for a moment. After a pause, it gave a shake of his head, but its words explained the meaning behind it. "Your words are nothing. I am...head. You come from city, Outlanders Shalimar and Thomas? Trouble always here for city dwellers. Unwelcome. Outlanders take but give no gifts."
no subject
"We don't want to cause you all any problems. We just were following a trail the Aspects left behind and were trying to figure out what they were doing here. Something caused some big explosion. You guys got any idea about that?"
no subject
Ultimately, he turned, motioning off deeper into the forest. "One and one come from Outlands to bridge. Many cycles inside. Then power burst. Now bridge...untamed."
no subject
"The bridge is untamed?" How did a bridge get untamed? Unless he (it?) didn't mean an actual bridge. "Is the bridge where you all live?"
no subject
"Bridge strings world to world. Was leashed, now it is free. Anything may travel the bridge."
no subject
"Well, that answers that," at least they actually got something from this trip. "I'm sure you're sick of my questions, but I was just wonder, you know who built the bridge in the first place?"
no subject
Lessch tilted his head one way, then another, thinking on her words before ultimately giving a shake of his head. "Bridge has been, will be. Come from...away. Across bridge."
no subject
"Are you saying you're not from this world or something?"
no subject
"Came through...many cycles ago. Before the city of Outlanders."
Thomas' eyes narrowed at Lessch's explanation and he finally turned to regard Shalimar. Had hear heard that right? They came from another world but before the city? What the hell did that mean?
no subject
"You came here before the city? Where'd you come from? What happened to your world?" A part of her wondered how long she'd get away with asking so many questions. At least he seemed willing to answer them so far.
no subject
"We come from away. We are...same. Home was...lost." He shook his head again, seeming aggitated. "Too many questions."
no subject
"I'm sorry for your loss," she offered a sympathetic look. In the back of her mind she wondered what exact that meant for them. Would their homes be lost too or was his case different? "Thank you for answering my questions. Is there anything we can do for you?"
no subject
The lizard man shook his head and made a quick but intricate gesture with a hand. Movement in the trees around them reveals several other individuals in hiding who move away.
"No. Caution, though. The trees are wary of outlanders." With that, Lessch inclines his head. "You do not take and are welcome, but deeper, they are not forgiving."
