Don’t change that channel!
Who; Mono and anyone
What; Practicing his powers
Where; Around the city
When; Mid-March

Mono was just finishing his last delivery for the day, the bag slung over his shoulder now empty, and he had plenty of time to spare. Time the boy had taken to making sure he had before the sun went down to spend practicing with his abilities. Mono still wasn’t fond of them for obvious reasons, but he was serious about learning to control it better. Especially to avoid hurting those around him, or letting it get out of control like it had before. The signal that he always gave off was clearly around to stay, stronger than before he went back…
But the rest of it was getting easier, thanks to help from Illyana, giving him advice and ideas to try out. More experience never hurt, though, and he wanted to make sure he didn’t forget things in between meetings with her. So after work on days when he didn’t meet up with someone else were reserved for this. He would find his way to a quiet back-alley where no one would be disturbed by his messing about with stuff, and would get to work.
Practicing the whole… portals through televisions was obviously still not happening, and Mono had been staying away from the mirrors that almost acted similarly (because his reflection in those was scary)… But everything else that was on the table. At least on smaller, careful scales.
‘Skipping’ as he called it, was easiest. His form blurring and stuttering as he walked and went from one end of the alley to suddenly a few feet further with an unnatural glitching quality, like a tape that wasn’t quite playing right. The boy would go back and forth like that a few times, until he felt a little more confident with it, before moving on.
‘Tuning’ was… A little more difficult. He could remember how big and powerful he’d felt after… The Man in the Hat was defeated, the way buildings had creaked and stood taller around him as he gathered his energy to make a final skip to the tower. He wasn’t sure if he could do that, reverse the wear on a worn, crooked building as he was now. Mono was pretty sure he’d only been that strong because of what happened and how close he’d been to the tower. How desperate he’d been to save his friend.
Though… The opposite of ‘fixing buildings’ had nearly happened when he returned to Aterat, he supposed.
Still, he hadn’t managed anything quite to that scale since his return, and he suspected it was from being in the Tower for so long. Now that he was cut off, it wasn’t quite so strong. So he focused on stacks of run down, soggy crates. Trying to make the leaning tower of boxes go back to standing tall. Though, that day, the bottom crate had kind of collapsed instead under the strain. Cracking and splintering, sending the rest of the stack tumbling. “Aw… Nuts!” A window rattled just slightly in its frame as the natural signal he generated fluctuated in his frustration. Then he sighed, and it settled.

"Practice is good and all, but I think we need to go over shielding. A good wizard knows how to put a circle around things so his powers contained where he wants it to be."
no subject
“Shielding?” He parroted, not sure what that was exactly. He guessed something to do with magic, given what Harry had said and the fact that he was actually a wizard. Unlike Mono, who was pretty sure he wasn’t a wizard. “I dunno if my powers are very containable… I was stuck in a tower when I went back for a while, but that didn’t stop the signal thing around me, either. It just made it go farther.” He thinks… That seemed like it might be how it worked. At least the kid was offering more information this time, as scattered and weird as it was.

He looked thoughtful for a moment. "Why don't we check out that Academy north of the city?"
no subject
“I hadn’t really thought about the Academy.” He responded with a little tilt of his head. Academy, he’d learned, was another word for a school. His track record with school… wasn’t exactly great. But at least this one didn’t sound scary. That said… “People are trying to fix it up, though. Seemed kinda like a bad idea to go out there and accidentally break stuff, right?” Of course, the boy couldn’t possibly know that most schools of magic or for people with powers of any kind tended to think about those possibilities ahead of time.

He wasn't trying to chastise the boy, of course, just letting him know what his options were. "What do you say we make a day trip?"
no subject
“Yeah? I guess we could do that, if it’s really okay.” It wasn’t like he could stay here now that he knew people were living near. Even if he was just a kid, the boy was more responsible than that... And paranoid about things going wrong with his abilities, so it seemed like a good idea.
no subject
"That's what schools of magic are for, kid." He smiled, standing taller. "Have you worked anything out on your own so far?"
no subject
“Some stuff, yeah. I know more about what I can do…” He responded a little more carefully than before. “I can do more now, I dunno if I told you stuff about what the man in the hat could do… But all of that… ‘Cause he’s kinda me too.” The boy added in a smaller mumble. “Like this-” He added, and his form seemed to stutter a bit as he walked along slowly, only to suddenly be a few paces ahead of Harry, almost like a video skipped forward. Turning to glance up at him, he shrugged. “The other stuff’s harder to show, like what I was doing in the alleyway. I don’t like to do that thing if people are around ‘cause I’m still not good at it.”
no subject
"Okay...what were you trying to do that you're not good at?"

As the man spoke, though, he relaxed slightly and moved on. “Um… I was trying to make the gross old crates better.” That doesn’t exactly narrow it down, and he kind of realizes it. Watching the man very carefully, he tried to explain it. “Back in my world… I kind of made some old buildings that were kinda sagging a little straighter. It was only for a minute though… And when I was in the tower, I made a room around me so I couldn’t see the ‘thing’ there anymore. So I can make stuff less bad, but I can also kinda make stuff more bad. It’s easier to make stuff more bad, especially by mistake. That’s why all those crates were broken when you got there.”

Or he was going to need to observe exactly what Mono was doing while he was doing it.

Harry was trying desperately to keep his mind from rushing down a rabbit hole. Was Mono capable of some form of time magic, where he could move an object through its various states of being? It would actually make more sense than real creation magic, transmuting existing essence. But if that was the case, why was so little around the object in question affected? So many questions.
"We need to find a damaged box."

(ooc: As with everything else, I totally understand if you would like to handwave the rest of this given the thread’s age. )
