It's a Watts party! (Just don't tell him)

Who; Aerith + YOU
What; Potluck party
Where; Gray building's downstairs common room
When; Sunday June 26th; after 4pm
Warnings; None

Aerith co-opted the common room of the gray building starting on Saturday when she began the process of decoration. The most important part of any decoration (especially for Watts) was the flowers and Aerith had put together a few center pieces for tables. Each flower that she'd chosen had symbolized friendship in some way and they were set up in the center of small tables that had been brought inside. Of course she wasn't the one that moved those tables, she had a trust bodyguard for things like that, but she did the decorating!

And the cooking! The main attraction was a pretzel bar in the center of the room. Please, thank Cloud for bringing it in and Jacob for making the pretzel rack at Aerith's request. The soft pretzels were premade and there were plenty for everyone who may come through to have several (if not more). In addition to that there were also several dipping sauces to choose from including cheese, caramel, cinnamon sugar, honey mustard, and a spicy ginger sauce with chili flakes (eat at your own risk).

A table next to it had Materia Xiaolongbao. Yellow is crab flavor, black is soybean, blue is pork, green is cilantro, and red is spicy shrimp. Next to those are tiny moogle sweet bean buns. They fit in the palm of your hand but some of the moogles look...a lot better than others. She did her best!

There was another table with a few drinks set up for people to grab including a materia bomb cocktail with a bit of alcohol and different flavored materia ice (peach, strawberry, and blueberry) and bright green bubble tea with pop bubbles in the bottom. The green tea is flavored like something very different than one might expect it to be, it's a bit bit bitter and yet also a bit sharp, almost biting. It's meant to be the flavor of wind, whatever that's supposed to be. The pop bubbles are extremely sour and explode in the mouth with the sourness. The drink is also somehow fizzy, don't ask how.

A third table was empty save for the friendship bouquet at it's center. There was a little handwritten note on the table saying:

Leave your dishes here! Complete with a heart.

Aerith herself can be found wandering around and paying close attention to the drink table, making sure to run back to the kitchen quickly to grab more drinks if they run low.

OOC: Feel free to use this log as an open thing for anyone to mingle and get to know each other. Characters are welcome even if they didn't bring a dish themselves, but the more dishes the better! Anyone is welcome to come even if they didn't know she was throwing this party, it'd be pretty obvious that there was something going on in the Gray Building and she'll be leaving the door open with a small table that has a friendship flower bouquet on it. Please have some fun!

"That's the most concerning thing you've learned about me? Really? I haven't been trying hard enough, I guess." He was kidding undoubtedly, at least that's the story you'll get from the man.

"No weather talk, I promise." It was awkward, but he was powerful through. He'd dealt with his share of awkward conversations in the past and he could press on through this one, too. He nodded in agreement. "Me either. It kind of has that...neighborhood bake sale feeling to it, doesn't it?" Which he'd heard of, but he'd also never lived in a suburb. "Wholesome, down-to-Earth. It's one steeple short of a church community center, and I mean that in the best way possible."

"No, the most concerning thing was what would happen if you fell into using dark magic," she gave with an emotionless shrug of her shoulders. Probably not the best time to bring that up, but hey, it'd been in the back of her mind for months now and it seemed to be weighing on every interaction they'd had. If talking went bad, she'd just do the logical thing: blame Watts. "Your past life on a ranch is the second most concerning thing, only because I got such a clear picture of you shoveling cow patties. I can almost imagine the smell." Which, for someone with enhanced senses, seemed really awful.

"Been to a lot of neighborhood bake sales?" she raised an eyebrow as her lips curled into a smirk. "I can see you at one." If only to get the cookies they might be selling. "I miss my church."

His jaw tightened at the reminder of that little encounter. It was a part of himself he constantly warred with, and after the taste this place had so graciously given him, he'd avoided her, and everyone else, partially because he didn't trust himself. He ran a hand over his face before nodding. "You know what? That's completely fair. I'd be concerned about that, too."

A grin split his face, though. He'd gotten control, and he was practically himself again. That was something. "I've been guilty of crashing one or two, yeah. You know, I've noticed the cross, but I've never taken you for the religious type. Maybe I just hang out with really intense religious people." Like Knights of the Cross, but that was another story.

"The ranch or the slightly evil you? Both seem like valid concerns," she said with a shrug. "More so the Ranch," she took a step towards him with a sway in her hips. "We did have some fun." That was not the thing she should be saying about those versions of themselves. It was something she was screaming at herself in her own head about and she immediately stiffened and took a step back.

"Not surprised to hear that. I imagine you could buy them out of their cookies," she said with a wry smile. "I lived in a church," she said with a chuckle. "I'm not religious in the slightest, but it's good for keeping my mother away." Not so much Piscary, he was too strong for that, but false comfort was still comfort.

It struck a chord, that was for sure, but probably not the one she was intending. His jaw flexed and he nodded, expression grim once again. "Yeah, we sure did. That sort of soul-damning, wholly corrupting kind of fun that's tough to come back from and still be, you know, you on the other side."

It seemed as though they both still had some demons to work through. "You know, I think that's the first time you've mentioned your mother." And that was a nice, safe subject change at least from his perspective. You know, unless she started asking about his mother. Then things would get awkward again.

"Yeah, well, maybe you're stronger than I thought." Most humans would have tried to find her to get her to bite them again. It was so easy to go down a slope with a vampire's bite. Some people were strong enough to resist the addictive qualities, but it was never something Ivy put to the test. Even now she couldn't help but wonder if it hadn't just been the darkness the carnival had brought out of him that had helped him to resist. The idea that maybe Watt's was right about her abilities not playing a role in how they may or may not feel about each other wasn't...awful. Actually, it was a pretty nice thought that she was afraid to think about for too long. Plus, it'd mean admitting to Watt's that he was right. Can't have that.

She let out a bitter little huff. "We don't really get along." That...was putting it mildly. "I'm the last of the Tamwood's and she had an entire life mapped out for me. I was supposed to be Piscary's Scion, Tamwood's have always been his favorite and someone getting that role? Most people would kill for it." She waved a hand in annoyance. "She wanted me to settle down, make more Tamood's then die and live forever at our Master's side as his favorite." Needless to say, that hadn't been what Ivy wanted. "Joining the IS and then quitting to start my own agency with a witch in a church? Not what she had in mind."

Harry had spent the better part of his semi-adult life resisting the urge to tumble down one slippery slope or another. He'd even resisted the temptation of a fallen angel to take up her power. A bit of pheromones had been child's play. Sure, for a bit, he'd wanted to go looking for her, but it had been so subtle, it was easier to bargain it off as wanting to clear the air rather than scratch an itch. He rolled his shoulder in a shrug.

"Maybe. I am one stubborn bastard, after all." He reached up, bending the brim of his hat slightly in a gentlemanly if completely facetious manner. "Wait, you work out of a church, too? Is it still consecrated?" Because that is almost, not it is completely, poetic, and makes him like her all the more for it.

"Might consider changing that to more than a maybe," she replied with playful roll of her eyes. He couldn't be serious with that hat bend, could he? Yeah, who was she kidding? He could, he definitely could.

"Yeah, still consecrated. Wouldn't work for the purpose of pissing my mom off if it wasn't." And that was really the most important part. "I even renovated the little kitchen it had so it'd work better for Rachel's potion making. Bell tower works great for my owls."

"Your partner cooks up potions in a kitchen? Doesn't she have a lab?" Where could Rachel possibly keep all her ingredients? Wait, there was a far more important point to be gleaned from this conversation.

"You...raise owls?" That was actually pretty cool.

"Yup, smells up the entire thing." For days after anything she makes. "Rachel couldn't even afford to pay off the hitmen after we left the IS. No chance she'd afford a lab." And while Ivy was generous, she wasn't that generous.

"Yeah, they're helpful on cases." Plus...she just liked the company. "Kinda miss them. Good thing time supposedly doesn't pass back home. They hated Rachel."

Okay, there was a lot to unpack there, from cooking potions in a kitchen to the terms of termination at her previous employer. He held up a hand.

"Hold on. What hitmen? I thought you said the IS was basically like the FBI."

He wondered if she wanted a pet, too. He'd be lying if he said he didn't miss his cat or Mouse. Damn if he didn't miss that smarter than he had any business being mongrel.

"I.S. has you sign a contract when you sign on to be a Runner. Turns out they really don't like when you break that contract early. You either pay it off or..." She rolled a shoulder in a casual shrug. "Most of it was just about them wanting to make an example of her and..." she wrapped a finger around the chain of her necklace and her expression almost looked sheepish for a moment.

"They weren't happy that she took me." In the end, she suspected that'd played a pretty large part in things.

He nodded, a look of confusion on his face, not because he didn't understand what she was describing, but that he did. It sounded familiar and like the sort of organized crime syndicate the government would overlook because of how uniform and controlled it kept the underworld. It sounded like a utopia for men like John Marcone.

"So, the I.S. is the mafia, then, and Rachel has a hit on her head because she pre-termed her contract? Does any contract ever naturally end?"

"Similar enough I guess," she said with a shrug. It was close enough that it got the point across. "Without it there'd be problems though. Human police don't stand a chance against Inderlanders. At least with the IS we can police ourselves to some degree." Might not be the best solution, but it was one of the only one they had.

"They're contracts, obviously they end eventually."

"I can understand that. The denizens of the Nevernever tend to police their own, too. Hell, us wizards have our own police force, too. Normal people shouldn't have to deal with things from our neck of the woods, but they do, anyway, even if they aren't equipped for it."

He wondered if the same was the case for her world and for her people, if humans in the Hollows were ever forced to deal with things beyond their understanding.

"You can say it sounds like a faerie tale all you want, Ivy. You wouldn't even be wrong. A lot of the Nevernever is ruled by one Faerie court or the other." And the rest was somewhere in between, or some creature's demesne.

"Yeah, actually." He adjusted his hat to a dramatic angle. "Warden Dresden, at your service, ma'am." Because joking about it was a lot easier than going in to the horrible situation that led to his being deputized, or the fact that he caused it. This was supposed to be a party.

"Ah, forgive me, Warden Dresden it'll be from now on." That got a genuine laugh from her, which was a rarity for someone as serious as Ivy.

"Both very similar and very different from how you might have heard they are in faerie tales." And he realized that was probably a terrible way to begin an explanation. "So, let met start with asking you what you know about faeries." It was an important basis to begin a comparison. Who knew, maybe her world didn't even have faeries. It would be both richer and poorer for it.

He raised a hand in surrender. "In their defense, they were desperate for manpower at the time of my being drafted."

"They're a small short lived race that have insectoid features. They look like...." she put her fingers together to show about six inches. "Around that big and like grim reapers wearing spider-silk cloaks. They're the sworn enemies of Pixies." Which were completely different. Obviously, everyone should know that.

"Ah, explains it." Desperation makes sense.

"Really? The fae where I come from are more diverse than humans, even, though the more powerful they are the bigger they tend to be. The most powerful are human-sized, with cat eyes and a preternatural beauty. Pixies," he made a motion as though indicating that group in particular, "are just minor fae, dew drop faeries, things like that. While no fae enjoy iron or are capable of lying, the little guys are really only good at holding one emotion at a time and they shed pixie dust wherever they go."

It sounded like their faeries were very different. "They come in a lot of forms, though. There's the Seelie court, the Summer fae, the Unseelie, and then the Wyld fae, who aren't beholden to either court but sort of keep their own council. Loosely."

"Pixies in my world are small humanoid creatures. Our third partner is a pixie with too many kids that lives in our garden. They protect it from fairies." It was interesting how similar and yet different their worlds were. Interesting and also a bit weird.

"They sound more organized and intelligent in your world than mine." She also wondered if that made them more dangerous. Fairies in her world were just...annoying more than anything.

"Really? Do you ever see them having little pixie versus faerie wars?" From personal experience, watching a troop of dew drop faeries charge into battle was a study of war in microcosm as well as one of the cutest things ever. Their battle cry being 'all hail the Za Lord' might have helped.

"Faeries? Sure. They're immortal, soulless beings with agendas."

"They're soulless in your world?" That hit a chord.

"You know, you're right. It is pretty terrifying...that that much hatred can fit into such small bodies." He wasn't even mocking her. It was actually all the more disturbing because they really only had the capacity for one emotion at a time, so when it was hate...that was scary.

"That, or they have souls that us mere mortals can't fathom." He paused for a moment, working on wording what he was going to say next. "In my world, when you delve into the deeper mysteries of magic, or whatever other fancy term means 'can see more than most people', you just...can? You can see things most people can't. Wizards can do something called 'Soul Gazing'. If we meet your eyes for longer than a few seconds, we see through them, see everything that makes you you in that moment, and see us in return. It's why I don't meet your eyes, I don't want to force that on you. It's...deeply intimate and you can never forget what you see, but I don't have to worry about meeting a Faerie's eyes. They either don't have a soul to gaze upon or it's so alien I can't see it."
