1. The Arrival - Bump into him all over the city! - OTA
“This an interesting shade…” A tall, willowy young man commented absentmindedly as Raimon made his escape from the many questions that had been thrown at him moments before he handed over the welcome-bag.
It was as though he’d wandered through the looking glass… Which, to be fair, wasn’t really that strange of an idea given the way his life had progressed of late. Still, this… Didn’t look right. It was far different from Tokyo even with just a vague glance, and it certainly wasn’t mementos… At first the teen thought perhaps he’d slipped into a palace- it had happened to him once before after all, but it didn’t have the right… energy.
There were people walking around, people of substance and life. Not shadows, not a representation of how a palace's ruler saw them… Just people going about their daily business. If it weren’t for the setting, one could easily believe there was nothing strange going on. There was, though, and it was puzzling…
But also beautiful, in a way. The aesthetic of this land was somewhere between a historic drama and a fantasy, like out of a video game he’d could imagine a friend of his playing. But it was intriguing, so much so that Yusuke wasn’t really paying attention to where he walked.
He was too caught up in picking out details and perhaps how he’d approach capturing it in a piece… Not smart, no, he should be paying more attention… Or freaking out… And maybe he would, at some point, but even then? The truth would always be stranger than fiction, and he had already accepted the idea of strange worlds other than his own that were beyond understanding.
2. Network Introduction - Audio - OTA
Good afternoon, everyone.
[ A smooth, mannerly tone is heard across the network. A new one, certainly, and this is confirmed a moment later. ]
My name is Yusuke Kitagawa, and I’ve only just arrived this morning. Forgive me for asking questions that I expect most are tired of hearing by now, but I am still trying to work some things about this place out. I have managed to learn a few things around the city, so I will try to limit my inquiries to the necessities.
I’ve heard that there are some rather unpleasant creatures and entities that reside in this city, and I should think that having a means of defense and assisting in defending others would be smart. Is there a preferred weapons dealer in the city, preferably one that would carry or willing to secure a sword of my preference?
[ He wants to get his hands on a katana rather quickly, if he can. No, the teen hadn’t yet considered what that might cost. He’ll figure that out later… as per usual. ]
I’ve also been informed that there are others here who have experience with other worlds and realities than their own, and I confess I’m rather curious to hear about such things. [ Not because he has experience with such things himself. Nope. Not at all. Not him. He’s not hoping one of these people will be someone he knows, even if he hasn’t spotted familiar names on the contact list… But still, from what he’d heard it was worth asking. Yusuke moved on rather quickly to… justify his question. ] You see, I hope that hearing such things will assist me in understanding and being prepared for what I may see or encounter here… And as an artist, I can’t help but wonder what inspiration I might draw from such stories and experiences.
With that out of the way, thank you for any answers you may be so kind as to provide me. I look forward to becoming acquainted with my fellow arrivals.
3. Feed the Artist - Few days after his arrival, the market - OTA
Yusuke was settling in as well as could be expected in this strange world. Better, perhaps, than some who were plucked out of their own lives and dropped into this one. He was at least somewhat familiar with alternate worlds and realities. Monsters and quests and magic weren’t unknown to him, given his time with the Phantom Thieves of Hearts.
What was probably going less well than other arrivals was he didn’t do particularly well when left to his own devices for too long. Yusuke was reasonably mature for his age, even more so than some of his teammates… But the teen did have some flaws that were a bit detrimental to his own health. The first thing the young man had done upon arriving was get carried away with new projects, inspired by the sights in this world and the unique aesthetic and beauty that could be found here. So desperate to move past his art slump, and eager to catch the beauty and the emotions that could be evoked by various sights and settings, he had quickly drained his funds on supplies.
This meant a lack of money for necessities like food and other comforts, but it hadn’t really mattered too much to him when he considered it after the fact. The orphanage provided three meals a day, so he could get food easily enough… The problem was, one had to remember they were hungry and to be mindful of the time to get said meals.
Yusuke was not known for being particularly good at remembering these things. Oftentimes his teammates had to pitch in to offer him something or ask him to stay to have some curry and coffee at Leblanc’s free of charge…
There was no one here to be pester him to take care of himself, though, and so he’d fallen rather easily into old habits. Put other things off for the sake of creating what he hoped would be a masterpiece. Art takes dedication and sacrifice, Yusuke. You want to succeed, don’t you? You want to create a masterpiece worthy of praise, so keep working.
The voice in his head insisted, a lingering mindset he hadn’t put behind him, as his stomach growled loudly from where he was sitting on a bench as he sketched out a scene before him. The scene was of the market, bustling with life and energy. He frowned every so often, brows knitting lightly and muttering about someone moving before he could finish capturing their pose. “Stop moving, please!” He uttered more audibly as he felt the piece slowly falling apart in front of him, desperate to at least finish outlining the scene he wanted to paint. Maybe this wouldn’t be so bad if he hadn’t been struggling with his own focus.
Some annoyed glances were cast in the teen’s direction for speaking up, and for the odd insistence in his tone. He noticed it after the fact and winced as he heard someone call him weird. The insult stung a bit, and he cast a glare in their direction on instinct. But he was reminded of a moment with the phantom’s leader when someone asked them to not be rude and to be mindful of those around them. Right… He was being rude again… But did no one understand he was trying to capture something beautiful? The energy and simple joys of life, even in the simplest moment of picking up food for meals with your loved one or looking at gifts, supporting passionate craftsman selling their wares.
For Enis
Yusuke blinked, realizing she was trying to explain the concept to him, so he offered a smile from under his mask and shook his head lightly. “Oh, no, I do know the definition of the word quite well, but thank you. I suppose I was only amused by the idea of it.” The particular irony to the idea, he supposed, though it didn’t cross his mind to explain. He was too distracted by the whispers and the woman standing before him who seemed to have answers.
“Clearly more than I was informed of when I arrived earlier…” He murmured thoughtfully, eyes wandering for a moment to the shadows again. “You’re right, of course, teamwork would be ideal when facing an unknown in the dark…” And all of this was terribly unknown compared to the strange places he was already used to. “But I’m not exactly alone, am I?” He said, more to himself than to Enis. He meant Goemon, of course, but she could take him to mean that she was there now as well.
Still, he would be smarter to not wander until he had a weapon of sorts for the occasion that calling upon an ice spell with Goemon would be foolhardy and potentially damaging to a small space. Folding his arms, one resting under his chin as he did his best to ignore the incessant sounds in the night as he opened his mouth to continue asking her about the ‘things that went bump in the night.’
But then the light catching in her eyes distracted him. “Like illuminated jewels… Such a mysterious air. I should like to capture it on canvas.” He commented with distraction, probably without the lead up that one should to suggesting such a thing, but he was blunt and to the point as ever. Thought too much of art and never considered how his words might sound.
For Mitsuru
“No… I expect that answers aren’t about to be spread out on a table for us to pick through like at a buffet, either.” Things were never so easy, and with the way this was all turning out… Even if a buffet would be nice. Both one of information and food, now that he thought about it.
“Most people are complicated in general, I think. Hard to figure out… And never what you think they are based on first impressions.” Or they were, but they were more than their first impressions and should not be lumped into a trait alone. The amount of blunders from making such assumptions was a bit steep on his part, he supposed in hindsight. “Had it been a while since you’d seen him, even before here?” Perhaps that was why it was complicated, now that he thought about it. If it was the case, then all the better that they had the chance to meet here… right? A chance to reconnect, and some comfort in an unfamiliar world and situation where things seemed very uncertain to him after only a few hours here.
What would he ask them if he could talk to them? A great many things, Yusuke supposed, if they weren’t anyone he knew… But if he ended up knowing said person somehow, perhaps the questions would be different. Best to keep those thoughts separate, the teen realized, to avoid… complicating things. Playing oblivious and unknowledgeable. That was more fitting, and he expected most of his team would agree. “I’d want to ask them more about this other reality they’ve been to… To find out if there are any similarities between that one and this?” He placed his hand under his chin, nodding slightly as he continued. “I suppose I’d also want to ask about these creatures tied to human emotions. Sounds rather…” Familiar. “Fanciful, and hard to not ponder over what that means and what they might be like.”
Yusuke hadn’t really considered his question might be a difficult one to answer. Even when she paused and seemed to break off her sentence midway for a few moments, it left him a little puzzled. He opened his mouth to ask what was wrong, when she continued instead and his mouth closed again and he tilted his head thoughtfully. For someone her age, the teen guessed a few years older than him at most, being in charge of the entire Kirijo Group would be an enormous responsibility and weight… The expectations placed upon someone in her position were probably more difficult than he could understand, really… “I see… That is quite the responsibility.” So he offered her a careful nod. “I believe you make a good point, though I hadn’t thought of it. It isn’t as though we’ve brought more with us to this world than our memories, talents and a few meager belongings… Simply people with pasts that hold no bearing here.”

The suggestion from Ignis does finally gets a pause, his attention shifting from art to his still empty stomach. He supposed, his own hunger aside, it would be rather rude to ignore his guide’s need to eat too… “Ah, that sounds like a sensible idea. I would be happy to assist in finding something to eat, though I confess I’m not sure what kind of food this place would have to offer compared to my world.” He responded, and a small part of him knew he had very limited funds… It wasn’t like he could fill up on the free ginger at a sushi place before eating… Though, Makoto had seemed rather alarmed and concerned by this habit…
At least street food was meant to be inexpensive, right?
no subject
But back to the current dilemma.
He didn't dare assume so he wasn't going to point out dishes similar to what Nida's student ate but of course he had the information. He himself made some of those dishes just to see what he could do. Back home he made a few as well just to challenge himself and see what he could come up with.
Heading towards the food stalls, Ignis pretended to ponder as he looked at Yusuke. "I'm open to suggestions as to what looks good."
no subject
He glanced at Ignis though as the man seemed to be pondering and trying to decide what to suggest. “Truthfully, I can’t help but find that it all smells quite delicious at the moment.” Being hungry, in his opinion, made all foods taste better. “Those do look rather good, though.” He added, gesturing to a street vendor selling seasoned, grilled meat on sticks. It reminded him of yakitori, so it seemed like a safe selection.
no subject
Ignis half wondered if signs such as had been placed in Lestallum back home would work, enticing people to travel just a little further to see what he was up to as far as meals went. It wasn't to try and put the tavern out of business though because he himself ate there as did friends of his when they were in town.
But he looked over at the other when he made his pronouncement of his food choice and nodded. "Those do look good. I'll go get us a few, and you can scout around for something else if you like."
no subject
Maybe… Hopefully…
Yusuke had been reaching for the satchel again to pull out some coins to offer when Ignis stated that he would purchase some of the skewers for them. “Are you sure? I have some coin left. I could contribute to the meal.” He commented carefully, though there weren’t many at the moment. Just what was left from purchasing the supplies he’d had earlier without thinking about things like future meals.
no subject
And to keep him busy, Ignis held out the skewers. "I'll go get us some drinks, but you can start eating at the table."
He had a plan to let Yusuke have all the skewers he just bought. There were some fresh fruits on display and other little various snacks. But if he could shoo his companion away, he could just so happen to acquire those things.
no subject
His stomach made itself heard again once they were in his possession, so it was hard to argue against going to find a seat to start eating while Ignis went looking for drinks. “Then I will wait for you there. I believe that table would make a nice vantage point to view the market.” He added with a thoughtful hum, turning in that direction as he carefully made sure to balance the trays of skewers was safe to avoid an accident.
no subject
There was an apple baked in a dough filling so he got two of those, drinks, a few more skewers (he didn't count), some freshly made cheeses, fan shaped pastries and some fresh fruit. It was almost embarrassing only because he was recognized because he went there so often. And because he went there so often and most knew where he worked, he got the majority of the things for free because to the shop owners, it was just good business.
They knew if Ignis approved, he'd be back to keep them in business which he definitely would.
So he brought everything back to the table and placed it in between he and Yusuke on the table with a smile. "Well it appears that I've gotten more than I bargained for, but let's enjoy all of it, shall we?"
no subject
Sitting down, he waited for the man to return and eyed the skewers thoughtfully. It seemed more polite to wait for Ignis to get back, but he really was hungry… And the man had said it was fine to start eating. So, with a small nod to himself, he began nibbling at one of the skewers while he waited. Internally realizing that he was really quite ravenous, when was the last time he’d eaten? He really couldn’t be sure now…
The teen certainly hadn’t expected the other to return with so much to choose from, aside from the skewers and drinks. He stared at the small buffet was set out between them. “This is quite a feast, certainly, considering you were only gone for drinks.” He commented, wide-eyed. Wasn’t this a bit much for a welcome gift?
Was he so proud that he wouldn’t accept such an offer? No. Yusuke knew better than to turn down free food, especially when it was put in front of his face and he was finally pried away from his art long enough to realize how much he needed it. Boss always offered a plate of curry and a cup of coffee, always free of charge… It was a kindness, and so this reminded him a little of that. “Thank you, I believe we shall. It looks quite delicious.”
no subject
Nida would eat whatever he brought home but as was the case when Ignis ignored his usual frugal ways, he still felt as if he had to explain why he bought so much.
However, Yusuke seemed to agree with the offerings and he nodded, waiting for his companion to get his food first. Ignis could eat all day if he went to work or went home. This was more for the boy across from him.
no subject
Not that it was a huge risk… Once Yusuke sat down to eat after realizing he hadn’t eaten in longer than the average person should go without food… He tended to consume quite a lot, more than even his peers whose lifestyles were far more active than an artist. Really, he just needed to learn to take care of himself and operate on a healthier schedule. If it weren’t for friends or generous people like Ignis, he wouldn’t be fairing particularly well now that he was on his own… Not that he was doing well under his prior mentors care.
But the point stood, Yusuke was very lucky to have run into Ignis when he had.
no subject
The day was beautiful so there wasn't any worry about rain or anything to ruin the food or the atmosphere. But he picked up one of the apples and bit into it. That was good, and he'd probably have to stop back over before work one day. The farmers canned them or pressed them and that was something that Ignis was going to learn. As it was he bought the cider from the farmers, but he did want to eventually do it himself.
"If you find you're still hungry, I can go get more to eat."
I'm sorry Ignis, u literally just tempted fate there with the weather thing
Yusuke enjoyed the meal though, his eyes watching people around the market as he did. Absently trying to commit expressions and silhouettes to mind while he ate. The clothing was such an interesting detail to take in as well, different from the more modern place he’d come from. The kinda of fabric, the way it laid or moved with each form, it would be interesting to capture in a piece… Something new to consider and practice on, he supposed. “This place is really very beautiful, as strange as it is… I feel as though there will be no shortage of inspiration to find, or things to keep one busy.” The teen considered the view again for a moment, finishing off another skewer and moving to grab some fruit next. “Have you been here long?”
The question gets a shake of his head, “Oh, that is very kind of your to offer, but I believe this will do. I think this is the most I’ve had in a few days.” He thinks… He can’t even remember when he last stopped to eat, but he was quite sure it wasn’t such a large feast. “This will certainly provide me with the fuel I need as I return to my project and keep me going for quite a while.”
no subject
More like two years if he really thought about it, but he wasn't focused on that right about now. He was silently pleased the boy was eating as much as he was, that would be less to take home for certain.
But when the other declared that this was a feast for the boy, Ignis nodded. "Well then by all means do take it home with you and enjoy it." And with that, he reached for his coffee.
no subject
Trying to not dwell on that concern too much, he snagged a pastry as he polished off the handful of grapes he’d taken before. Yusuke decided to focus on some questions that perhaps this man could answer if he’d been here so long, thinking back to the doll Mitsuru had given him that they were rather at a loss concerning its species. “I suppose that you’ve been here so long would mean you’ve seen your fair share of the creatures who inhabit the wilds here?” There is a point to this question, and it would undoubtedly amuse.
The idea of taking the remains of the feast home is a tempting one… “Really? Hm… Perhaps the nonperishable food, if you would not miss it… Things that don’t need to be stored carefully. I don’t have much room of my own given I was assigned the orphanage for lodgings. I’m not sure if they would welcome me taking up space in their kitchens refrigerator. But things that won’t go bad would be convenient, I might be able to share them as well.” If the young lady who had displayed an interesting talent for panting returned, the child might like to shake snacks.
no subject
"Yes, there are some pretty nasty ones compared to the wonderful additions of the chocobos. Some carry knives and are small and green. Those are Tonberries and it's best not to take them on as they seem to come in pairs or more. There was also a rather nasty beast it took more than a few of us to take down." That had him silent for a moment or two since friends had passed away due to it. But he tried to brighten a little bit for Yusuke's sake. "There are dire rats and all manners of creatures if you go searching for them. If fighting isn't your thing, stick to the main roads."
Hearing about the accommodations had him frown thoughtfully and he nodded. "Then by all means eat what you can and I can take whatever home with me that won't work for you." Besides, he could find all manners of children on his way to give snacks to if needed.
no subject
He had a more specific question concerning the creatures, of course, but he listened politely as Ignis launched into listing the main ones and describing them. “I had heard of many of those during my first day. Though a more broad list is helpful, thank you. Someone referred to those tonberries as ‘green potatoes with knives’ and warned me away from them. Though I still almost had a run in with them before someone stumbled upon me and lead me away to a safer place.” Many of the creatures aside from the Tonberry didn’t worry him too much, of course.
Despite his appearance, he did have a means of defence and experience in fighting strange monsters. Still, until he got his hands on a sword as well, he was being cautious and not running headlong into a potentially dangerous situation. He had a better head on his shoulders than some, even if it… didn’t extend to his eating habits and sleep schedule. “I was actually more curious if you’d heard of something more specific than that?”
He flipped open his sketchbook to a specific page. Yusuke seemed to have been drawing several variations of something at the center of the page. A plush, by the looks of it. Something… between a bear and a horse? “I was given this prize from the circus the day I arrived by a new friend who won it, but neither of us had seen such a creature before. Since many children’s toys are based on real creatures, we were trying to figure out if it was something native to this world? We haven’t seen any horses, since those chocobo birds seem to serve the function that horses would…? We considered the possibility that perhaps they existed in some mutated form.” Ignis, this teenager had put way too much thought into something as simple as a weird looking stuffed animal.
“I was hoping you could enlighten me on the matter, given you’ve been here so long. Originally, I intended to use the bright, varied colours of the plush as inspiration for a piece, but now I find myself intrigued by the creature itself. We’ve been calling it a ‘beorse’ until we learn better.”
Yup. Bear + Horse = Beorse. He feels very clever to have come up with that, too.
He practically beamed at the generosity offered, “Thank you, I’ll do just that then.” It really would be a large help, having small things to nibble on if he needed it (provided he remembered they were there).

At hearing about being led away from the Tonberries, he nodded. "Well, that may be an issue as they did appear rather suddenly. They are native to my world as are chocobos."
Emerald eyes took a good look at the creature and shook his head. "There was a bear I do believe shortly after I first arrived. We won that fight." He sighed as he continued to look at the sketch.
"There was a wild boar another time I suppose you'd call it. And that..was a rather interesting fight." And that one made him think of the time all of the undead decided to come out another time and well..
"And should either reappear, we'll simply take them down again. There was a rather ugly plant we fought this other time as well. But it seems when these bigger and far nastier opponents do show, we do attempt to get the locals into their homes first."
He wasn't sure what Yusuke was asking particularly about the thing, but it really wasn't for the feint of heart. "Do you have any fighting skills perchance?" Not that he was encouraging the boy, but it was a thing to know.

Still, the teen would endeavor to learn more for the sake of his art. For now, he’d be content with coming up with various possible appearances based on the doll. Was it a little silly? Perhaps, but Yusuke could be sometimes. Often considered odd by most people’s standards, the artist simply hard a hard time shifting focus once something caught his interest.
The question gets a small, thoughtful pause. Yusuke had been trying to be rather careful with his answers about what he could do around people. The fact that there were people who came from his world made him cautious, if only to avoid altering the other person’s world views too dramatically. The metaverse, shadow monsters born of human emotions, and palaces of a person’s distorted desires? That was kind of a lot to take in, and creating drastic changes in someone’s cognition was not something done lightly. So when it came to those from his world, he was trying to think how to approach revealing that.
But Ignis, with his knowledge of chocobos and tonberry, was clearly not of his world. So there was some safety in that, and at some point, people were undoubtedly going to come across him in situations where his abilities would be obvious. Enis already had in a way, and Illyana was… very good at asking questions. “I do, yes. I and my group were often faced with monsters that could only be dealt with through confrontation.” It’s just… those monsters were born of human emotions or a person’s shadow grown powerful through their distorted desires. “I have an ability to call forth a persona, my other self, to assist in battle. It grants me the ability to use Japanese blades such as katana or tachi. It also grants me other abilities I can use should I need.”

Surprised though he was once he heard about the abilities. And of course the scholar in him wanted to know more but it wasn't polite to go sticking one's nose in other's business too far. And while he was sure the ability was something to behold in battle, it did make him smile. The closest he had to that was when Noctis warped and a shadow image was left behind of where he'd been just a moment before.
"I see. Well, since you are knowledgeable regarding such things, do you have a blade with you? Or is that something you can sort of summon in battle?" That too he would be familiar with since Ignis carried no weapon on his person, as it had to be summoned.
And while he waited for his answer, it did occur to him that this boy and Nida's student did share the whole Japanese thing. Yuki had a katana if he remembered correctly and that was definitely a weapon they might bond over.

“I was just out of class for the day when I was brought here, so it was still stored away for safekeeping.” He nibbled on a little more pastry as he considered the next option. “I’ve been told there is a forge in the city where I can see about acquiring one, so I shall be seeing about that soon.” And surely he could stay out of trouble that long, now that he’d been here a few days and had a better idea of what was or wasn’t dangerous. Goemon could be called upon for spells, and it would serve as defence until he could get a proper weapon so they could be a proper team again.

He really wanted to see this persona, but it sounded as if it were only a battle thing and that wasn't something he was in any rush to see anyone do around here. He then bit on some of the meat on the skewers which definitely were good. There was a good seasoning on them, and he sat there trying to figure out the herbal blend as Yusuke went on.
The advisor then nodded. "I can show you where the forge is if you'd like." It wouldn't hurt to show the other where it was, just in case he needed it. And perhaps a payment plan or something could be worked out with the shopkeepers there. It would be worth it to at least ask.

Still, if Ignis ever wanted to see it, he need only ask. If not, there would undoubtedly be plenty of opportunity.
Yusuke’s eyes lit up at the offer. “You needn’t take me all the way there… But I certainly wouldn’t be opposed to directions. I have yet to get a feel for getting around this city yet. It’s not as large or busy as Tokyo was… But it still is a bit daunting given the differences.” He responded with a polite nod. To be pointed in the right direction at least would be a big help to the teen, as he couldn’t rely on phone apps and had yet to acquire some sort of map to guide him yet.

It did make him think though. "I do wonder if a sort of map should be drawn and handed out in the satchels the shopkeeper hands out."
Another thought. "Or we could see about drawing one ourselves and labeling it and leaving it outside of the apartments, or even inside of them in a common area to help out."

Yusuke perked up at the comment about a map. “I was saying the same thing to someone I met upon my arrival. She had only just arrived herself, and we agreed that a map would be quite practical to include in those odd welcome bags they hand out. It seems rather lacking in thought to have not included one.” It was almost like they wanted new people to get lost! Well, probably not… But it was inconvenient in his opinion, nonetheless. “She had mentioned something about attempting to put together a rough map. We’ve been meeting at the historium to discuss such things.”
Another person in agreement meant that such an endeavor would not be amiss. Who knew how many might benefit from such a thing? The teen didn’t know how often the city itself changed, of course, and how easily a map could become obsolete… But something was better than nothing, surely.
