1. The Arrival - Bump into him all over the city! - OTA
“This an interesting shade…” A tall, willowy young man commented absentmindedly as Raimon made his escape from the many questions that had been thrown at him moments before he handed over the welcome-bag.
It was as though he’d wandered through the looking glass… Which, to be fair, wasn’t really that strange of an idea given the way his life had progressed of late. Still, this… Didn’t look right. It was far different from Tokyo even with just a vague glance, and it certainly wasn’t mementos… At first the teen thought perhaps he’d slipped into a palace- it had happened to him once before after all, but it didn’t have the right… energy.
There were people walking around, people of substance and life. Not shadows, not a representation of how a palace's ruler saw them… Just people going about their daily business. If it weren’t for the setting, one could easily believe there was nothing strange going on. There was, though, and it was puzzling…
But also beautiful, in a way. The aesthetic of this land was somewhere between a historic drama and a fantasy, like out of a video game he’d could imagine a friend of his playing. But it was intriguing, so much so that Yusuke wasn’t really paying attention to where he walked.
He was too caught up in picking out details and perhaps how he’d approach capturing it in a piece… Not smart, no, he should be paying more attention… Or freaking out… And maybe he would, at some point, but even then? The truth would always be stranger than fiction, and he had already accepted the idea of strange worlds other than his own that were beyond understanding.
2. Network Introduction - Audio - OTA
Good afternoon, everyone.
[ A smooth, mannerly tone is heard across the network. A new one, certainly, and this is confirmed a moment later. ]
My name is Yusuke Kitagawa, and I’ve only just arrived this morning. Forgive me for asking questions that I expect most are tired of hearing by now, but I am still trying to work some things about this place out. I have managed to learn a few things around the city, so I will try to limit my inquiries to the necessities.
I’ve heard that there are some rather unpleasant creatures and entities that reside in this city, and I should think that having a means of defense and assisting in defending others would be smart. Is there a preferred weapons dealer in the city, preferably one that would carry or willing to secure a sword of my preference?
[ He wants to get his hands on a katana rather quickly, if he can. No, the teen hadn’t yet considered what that might cost. He’ll figure that out later… as per usual. ]
I’ve also been informed that there are others here who have experience with other worlds and realities than their own, and I confess I’m rather curious to hear about such things. [ Not because he has experience with such things himself. Nope. Not at all. Not him. He’s not hoping one of these people will be someone he knows, even if he hasn’t spotted familiar names on the contact list… But still, from what he’d heard it was worth asking. Yusuke moved on rather quickly to… justify his question. ] You see, I hope that hearing such things will assist me in understanding and being prepared for what I may see or encounter here… And as an artist, I can’t help but wonder what inspiration I might draw from such stories and experiences.
With that out of the way, thank you for any answers you may be so kind as to provide me. I look forward to becoming acquainted with my fellow arrivals.
3. Feed the Artist - Few days after his arrival, the market - OTA
Yusuke was settling in as well as could be expected in this strange world. Better, perhaps, than some who were plucked out of their own lives and dropped into this one. He was at least somewhat familiar with alternate worlds and realities. Monsters and quests and magic weren’t unknown to him, given his time with the Phantom Thieves of Hearts.
What was probably going less well than other arrivals was he didn’t do particularly well when left to his own devices for too long. Yusuke was reasonably mature for his age, even more so than some of his teammates… But the teen did have some flaws that were a bit detrimental to his own health. The first thing the young man had done upon arriving was get carried away with new projects, inspired by the sights in this world and the unique aesthetic and beauty that could be found here. So desperate to move past his art slump, and eager to catch the beauty and the emotions that could be evoked by various sights and settings, he had quickly drained his funds on supplies.
This meant a lack of money for necessities like food and other comforts, but it hadn’t really mattered too much to him when he considered it after the fact. The orphanage provided three meals a day, so he could get food easily enough… The problem was, one had to remember they were hungry and to be mindful of the time to get said meals.
Yusuke was not known for being particularly good at remembering these things. Oftentimes his teammates had to pitch in to offer him something or ask him to stay to have some curry and coffee at Leblanc’s free of charge…
There was no one here to be pester him to take care of himself, though, and so he’d fallen rather easily into old habits. Put other things off for the sake of creating what he hoped would be a masterpiece. Art takes dedication and sacrifice, Yusuke. You want to succeed, don’t you? You want to create a masterpiece worthy of praise, so keep working.
The voice in his head insisted, a lingering mindset he hadn’t put behind him, as his stomach growled loudly from where he was sitting on a bench as he sketched out a scene before him. The scene was of the market, bustling with life and energy. He frowned every so often, brows knitting lightly and muttering about someone moving before he could finish capturing their pose. “Stop moving, please!” He uttered more audibly as he felt the piece slowly falling apart in front of him, desperate to at least finish outlining the scene he wanted to paint. Maybe this wouldn’t be so bad if he hadn’t been struggling with his own focus.
Some annoyed glances were cast in the teen’s direction for speaking up, and for the odd insistence in his tone. He noticed it after the fact and winced as he heard someone call him weird. The insult stung a bit, and he cast a glare in their direction on instinct. But he was reminded of a moment with the phantom’s leader when someone asked them to not be rude and to be mindful of those around them. Right… He was being rude again… But did no one understand he was trying to capture something beautiful? The energy and simple joys of life, even in the simplest moment of picking up food for meals with your loved one or looking at gifts, supporting passionate craftsman selling their wares.
For Enis
Yusuke blinked, realizing she was trying to explain the concept to him, so he offered a smile from under his mask and shook his head lightly. “Oh, no, I do know the definition of the word quite well, but thank you. I suppose I was only amused by the idea of it.” The particular irony to the idea, he supposed, though it didn’t cross his mind to explain. He was too distracted by the whispers and the woman standing before him who seemed to have answers.
“Clearly more than I was informed of when I arrived earlier…” He murmured thoughtfully, eyes wandering for a moment to the shadows again. “You’re right, of course, teamwork would be ideal when facing an unknown in the dark…” And all of this was terribly unknown compared to the strange places he was already used to. “But I’m not exactly alone, am I?” He said, more to himself than to Enis. He meant Goemon, of course, but she could take him to mean that she was there now as well.
Still, he would be smarter to not wander until he had a weapon of sorts for the occasion that calling upon an ice spell with Goemon would be foolhardy and potentially damaging to a small space. Folding his arms, one resting under his chin as he did his best to ignore the incessant sounds in the night as he opened his mouth to continue asking her about the ‘things that went bump in the night.’
But then the light catching in her eyes distracted him. “Like illuminated jewels… Such a mysterious air. I should like to capture it on canvas.” He commented with distraction, probably without the lead up that one should to suggesting such a thing, but he was blunt and to the point as ever. Thought too much of art and never considered how his words might sound.
For Mitsuru
“No… I expect that answers aren’t about to be spread out on a table for us to pick through like at a buffet, either.” Things were never so easy, and with the way this was all turning out… Even if a buffet would be nice. Both one of information and food, now that he thought about it.
“Most people are complicated in general, I think. Hard to figure out… And never what you think they are based on first impressions.” Or they were, but they were more than their first impressions and should not be lumped into a trait alone. The amount of blunders from making such assumptions was a bit steep on his part, he supposed in hindsight. “Had it been a while since you’d seen him, even before here?” Perhaps that was why it was complicated, now that he thought about it. If it was the case, then all the better that they had the chance to meet here… right? A chance to reconnect, and some comfort in an unfamiliar world and situation where things seemed very uncertain to him after only a few hours here.
What would he ask them if he could talk to them? A great many things, Yusuke supposed, if they weren’t anyone he knew… But if he ended up knowing said person somehow, perhaps the questions would be different. Best to keep those thoughts separate, the teen realized, to avoid… complicating things. Playing oblivious and unknowledgeable. That was more fitting, and he expected most of his team would agree. “I’d want to ask them more about this other reality they’ve been to… To find out if there are any similarities between that one and this?” He placed his hand under his chin, nodding slightly as he continued. “I suppose I’d also want to ask about these creatures tied to human emotions. Sounds rather…” Familiar. “Fanciful, and hard to not ponder over what that means and what they might be like.”
Yusuke hadn’t really considered his question might be a difficult one to answer. Even when she paused and seemed to break off her sentence midway for a few moments, it left him a little puzzled. He opened his mouth to ask what was wrong, when she continued instead and his mouth closed again and he tilted his head thoughtfully. For someone her age, the teen guessed a few years older than him at most, being in charge of the entire Kirijo Group would be an enormous responsibility and weight… The expectations placed upon someone in her position were probably more difficult than he could understand, really… “I see… That is quite the responsibility.” So he offered her a careful nod. “I believe you make a good point, though I hadn’t thought of it. It isn’t as though we’ve brought more with us to this world than our memories, talents and a few meager belongings… Simply people with pasts that hold no bearing here.”

It makes me the Queen of Limbo. It was a lot of work to secure that role. [ Hostile takeovers are hard. ]
Sorceress Supreme Magik.
no subject
[ Avoiding them would absolutely be the smartest thing. ]
So it’s not an inherited title…? [ That was rather interesting… But, because Illyana had actually confirmed it… She was absolutely going to be called that now. ]
Sorceress Supreme Magik, then. It’s a pleasure to have made your acquaintance, even in this rather strange situation.
no subject
No, an earned one. Through hostile takeover. [ Oh no. She's snickering now because he went with it. This one will be fun. ]
Since you've been so polite, just Magik will do.
no subject
A blacksmith? I shall have to see if I can find it. [ He smiled thoughtfully to himself. ] That does sound rather fitting for this place when I think about it.
[ The overall aesthetic had the feel of eras gone by with a hint of magic and mystery. He had never seen a real blacksmith shop. This should be interesting. ]
You must be quite the tactician, in that case. [ Yusuke couldn’t help but wonder about this world of hers. What was it like? How must her earning the title of queen have gone?
The teen was distracted, though, as she continued. ]
Thank you, then, Magik. That is very kind of you to allow. [ Since that seemed somewhat less formal, he continued a moment later. ] You can call me Yusuke, in that case.
no subject
You could say that. Others have phrased it in a less flattering light. [ Quite the manipulator was what others had said, but that was neither here nor there. ] Everyone has an opinion. [ Ignore that it might be a correct opinion some of the time. ]
That's me, kind. [ Yup. Definitely. ] What would I have called you if that hadn't been the case?
no subject
[ Sometimes battles and the tactics worked out could seem ruthless, he supposed… But it could be elegant in a way, if executed well. ] And some people’s opinions are unfavourable? I do find it rather disheartening when a less than positive opinion is cast my way, so that’s most unfortunate.
[ He should be questioning if it were the correct opinion, but she had been very helpful and reasonable with him thus far. ]
Oh, well, my older peers and others generally call me by my surname Kitagawa, unless particularly close. Sometimes Kitagawa-kun or Kitagawa-san depending on the person. [ Yusuke responded thoughtfully, though he supposed ‘Fox’ also counted, even if it was a code name. ]
no subject
Many people's opinions are. It doesn't matter much to me. [ Sort...of...she can at least pretend that's true with a stranger! ] They have fair reasons.
How much do you like to hear yourself talk? [ She sounds more than a bit amused. ]
no subject
Thank you. I’m sure it will be an experience to behold, regardless. I’ll be more satisfied if I can secure a katana in the end, though.
[ Of course, it isn’t as though Yusuke knows her well enough to guess otherwise! ] So you have a thick skin to weather such opinions.
[ Cue a slightly confused pause. Clearly the teen didn’t really get what she meant. ]
I’ve never recorded myself to say what I think of my voice one way or another?
[ No, he missed the boat there. ]
no subject
I didn't have a soul. [ It was difficult to not laugh, but somehow she managed. It was a Christmas miracle. The next thing he said made it even harder though, but she was doing her best. ]
No? Surprising. You'll have a recording now to judge then.
no subject
Wait, you didn’t? That indicates that you do now, did you… not have one before or did you lose it somehow?
[ If only he knew how amusing he was… ]
I suppose that I do, having left the audio message on the network like that. [ A pause, thoughtful as something struck him rather late. ] I actually hadn’t considered how this might all work. Does this remain long term? Including the responses?
[ How could you not stop and question how data was stored on a public network? Flits through his head in a suspiciously familiar voice. ]
no subject
It was taken from me once and then I was recreated without one. I went on a quest to retrieve the parts of it. [ If only. She's glad he hasn't realized it yet though, because this is at least more amusing than everything else lately. ]
Would it bother you if it did?
no subject
I suppose I could be capable of learning, but that would take time and resources compared to picking up something I already know how to use. Would that not be more practical in our current situation? Plus, there’s something about it that feels more fitting to me, an elegance in it.
[ Honestly, that all sounded terribly complicated. Every time Illyana said something, it was honestly strange and new. ] Someone put you through something like that?? It sounds like you’ve been through quite an ordeal…
And it sounds like quite an undertaking to embark on. Did you have any help?
Perhaps a little… Not about today’s broadcast, of course. [ That ship sailed anyway, and at least he couldn’t think of saying he wouldn’t want staying out there. ] But if there came a need to converse covertly with other people here, it would probably be better to find other means than this if there are no secure channels.
[ He’s not the tech person in his group, though, so he’s not sure how that would all work. ]
no subject
Rather than answering his question she just completely ignored it. Mentioning that it'd been an ordeal was too close to making her feel something genuine and she wasn't sure about that right now. ] No. I had no help other than the army I took.
[ And they had come because she'd beaten them. It'd taken a while to amass them. ]
I think most people already realize it. As far as we know the locals have no access to this, but the Aspects do.
no subject
Which wasn’t hard, considering he was caught up in trying to figure out what she meant by interesting. It was… better than calling him outright weird, and could be taken in a positive light over a negative one. At least her tone didn’t sound particularly insulting or judgemental, so he decided to take it that way. ] Am I…? That’s kind of you to say.
[ Yusuke took a moment to wonder over how she hadn’t addressed much of what he said, then belatedly realized that… Perhaps it wasn’t a subject one would be comfortable speaking of at length. He certainly had things he would rather not speak of, not with strangers. So he at least… left it at that. ]
I see… So it’s generally only utilized by those of us who’ve arrived, but the Aspects can also use it. I’ll have to keep that in mind when I make use of this in the future.
[ Just in case there came a day when they didn’t want the Aspects to be privy to a discussion for whatever reason. Which, on that note, he thought to ask something, after having agreed to find out more about the world to share with another arrival. ]
I say that not knowing much about these Aspects, beyond that they seem to be in charge. I haven’t heard much about them, at least not as yet. I don’t suppose that as someone who’s been here longer than me, that you might know anything I should about them?
no subject
Though his comment about her being kind caused her to burst out in a brief laugh. ] Kind hmm...? [ Yup, he was interesting. ]
I wouldn't worry about the Aspects. They seem incompetent. Surprising they even understand how to use the technology. [ Is she salty? Yes. Very salty. ] They know less than we do. One is the aspect of Death for this world, but he seems to have trouble bringing people back complete. They're both supposedly as new as this world is itself. [ Whether or not that was because they lacked the power or the experience and knowledge, she wasn't sure. ] They have little memory of whom or whatever created them. For the most part they've appeared to explain how something they did resulted in a mess for us.
no subject
To be quite honest, there was more to my world than met the eye. So I’m not exactly a stranger to dangerous creatures and things lurking about that one needs to be prepared for.
[ Although, she might be less impressed to hear that it had been a replica, and not the real thing. But that hadn’t mattered in the metaverse. It looked real enough, and that was what counted there. He expected that here he would need the real thing, at least from what he’d heard so far.
He blinked, falling silent as though at her laughter. ] Was that amusing of me to have said?
[ Incompetent adults in charge, huh? Somehow he was disappointed and unsurprised. ]
That’s rather disappointing, to think that we’ve been brought out of our own worlds to help this one while those in charge of guiding things don’t know how to do their jobs. [ Wouldn’t it make more sense to put people experienced, who knew what they were doing, in charge? ] So death in this place isn’t permanent, but not without its complications? And we only see this Athony in that situation, or both of them if there’s been a mess made.
no subject
Very. But that seems fitting. [ Went with the entire amusing motif he seemed to have going for him.
She gave him a brief smirk and strange smirk. ] Correct on all fronts. Sounds fun doesn't it?
no subject
[ He looked a bit confused by her response, though, brow furrowing as he wasn’t entirely sure he liked not knowing why she was amused. Well… She hadn’t outwardly insulted him, so perhaps he just needed to pay more attention to figure out how he’d managed to be funny. ]
I believe our definitions of fun may differ…? Seems like more to worry about on top of being displaced than anything.
no subject
Maybe you just don't understand fun.
no subject
It is truly fascinating. I’ve been working on a piece based on human emotions that I’ve drawn inspiration from there for. [ It was imperfect, though… He needed to make it better, to prove something to himself and someone else. The explanation was a complicated thing, though… Yusuke needed a moment to work out how to explain it without getting too particularly long winded. ] We have found when we go there, we can help people who have been victimized by others in the real world… Facing the shadow born of someone’s distorted desires can cause them to have a change of heart, to return to the real world selves and seek to confess to their crimes and try to make up for the harm they’ve done.
[ Yusuke couldn’t say she was wrong, exactly. ]
Maybe I don’t… I have realized that I’ve a lot to learn about the world and people, and there are many things I have yet to experience.
[ Though, he would argue that this did not seem fun on any level. ]

What an interesting ethical can of worms. [ It sounded a bit like something telepaths would do, which always made for some unpleasant ethical dilemmas. ] So you force people to become what you want them to be?
[ She pauses. ] I understand.

[ He winced a little. The teen hadn’t really considered it like that… And when she put it like that? It sounded pretty bad… ]
I suppose one could put it that way… Generally, my group focuses on people who are ignored by the law or are so good at hiding their crimes so they’re overlooked despite hurting or causing harm to befall others. That’s not to say there aren’t others who use this place to trigger more dire reactions in the target. We’ve currently had someone causing something called mental shutdowns come to our attention, which causes suicides and other effects… We’re trying to find and stop them, or we were trying to work out where to start to do so when I got dropped in here.
[ Yusuke was a little surprised by her response. ] Then you understand my uncertainty.

[ She sounds just a bit sinister there. ]How do you find out if they're people that are good at hiding their crimes? [ That was what she was most curious about. ] Mental shutdowns, hm. What an interesting way to get rid of people. I can see why it'd be difficult to find out who was causing that. [ If they caused people to commit suicide, then how could you actually find clues to who was causing it? ] Clever.
I do. I haven't spent much time around other people. [ So it wasn't like she understood them too well herself.]

He found this question somewhat easier to answer, at least. ] We investigate rumors in order to confirm if they’re true or not. If confirmed, everyone must agree before we proceed. There’s… often people who have tried to seek help because of this person, or ignored reports by those who could potentially bring attention to a situation.
[ He nodded quickly, a frown evident in his voice. ] It’s been terribly difficult to find whoever is doing this… Only rumors given to us by the shadows of our targets suggesting someone with a black mask was also present. [ A small hum. She wasn’t wrong. ] That is a way to describe it, clever in a rather horrible way.
[ Ah… Yusuke understood then, as sad as it was. ] I see… I confess, I was rather isolated as well until recently.

How well thought out. [ Honestly, she wouldn't have expected it to be well thought out. ] So you help the underdogs? What do you all get out of it?[ Seemed....nice of them if they do it for free. ]
Most clever things are. [ She chuckles. ] Ah, a black mask? That narrows it down. Half our teams wear one.
[ She pauses for a second as a pang of something like sympathy hits her like a wave. ] Oh? In what way?
